The Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) is an invasive beetle species that has devastated ash tree populations across North America. Originally from Asia, this highly destructive pest has spread rapidly, killing millions of ash trees and threatening landscapes in Southern Maine. The EAB has now been confirmed in communities throughout the state, making early detection and professional treatment essential for protecting vulnerable ash trees.

Without intervention, infested trees typically die within three to five years, becoming hazardous and costly to remove. If you suspect an EAB infestation on your property, Black Fern Tree Service provides effective Emerald Ash Borer treatment and prevention services in South Portland, Falmouth, Windham, Yarmouth, and surrounding areas.

🏝️🌲 ISLAND TREE WORK, MAINE STYLE 🌲🏝️

Did you know that Black Fern Tree Service brings professional tree care to some of Maine's near by and remote islands?

A few times each summer, we load our equipment onto a barge, make the trip across the water, and set up camp right on the island. By coordinating multiple jobs during the same visit, island residents can share the transportation costs, making professional tree work more affordable for everyone.

Whether it's hazardous tree removals, pruning, improving views and property safety, or this year we're even planting a new veggie garden! We are equipped to handle projects that many companies simply can't reach.

There's something special about spending a week living and working alongside island communities—camping under the stars, waking up to ocean views, and spending time together as a team.

If you live on a Maine island and have tree work you've been putting off, now is the perfect time to gather your neighbors and schedule a visit. The more jobs we can complete during a trip, the more everyone saves on barge transportation costs.

📞 Contact us today to discuss bringing Black Fern Tree Service to your island this season!

🌳 Precision Matters 🌳

Tree work isn’t just cutting—it’s calculated, technical, and often done in some very tight spaces. Around homes, fences, sheds, and power lines, every move has to be planned and controlled to safely bring a tree down piece by piece without damage.
This is where experience truly counts. As arborists, we’re trained to assess risk, use specialized rigging techniques, and execute removals with precision—even in the most challenging spots.

Before hiring someone for tree work, make sure they are:
✔️ Fully insured
✔️ Properly licensed
✔️ Experienced in technical removals

It’s not just about getting the job done—it’s about getting it done safely, protecting your property, and doing it right the first time.

When it comes to your home and your trees, don’t settle for shortcuts. 🌲💪

The Maine Department of Agriculture, Conservation and Forestry’s Maine Forest Service is asking residents, landowners, and municipalities to help slow the spread of the invasive emerald ash borer (EAB), a destructive insect responsible for killing millions of ash trees across North America.

As the EAB continues to threaten Maine’s forests and communities, the Maine Forest Service encourages the public to learn how to identify ash trees and signs of infestation, participate in monitoring efforts, and help prevent the spread of invasive pests.

Here are five ways to help slow EAB:
1) Learn how to identify ash trees
2) Learn how to identify signs of EAB
3) Learn how to identify the EAB
4) Create a girdled ash tree to monitor for EAB
5) Leave your firewood at home and prevent the spread of invasive pests

These five steps, along with many other helpful resources, are accessible at https://www.maine.gov/dacf/mfs/forest_health/invasive_threats/eab/EABsigns.shtml.

🌿 Nature’s Architecture at Its Finest

One of the perks of being an arborist is we have some time off in the winter to travel to warmer climates! This winter in Costa Rica we learned more about these amazing strangler fig trees.

Strangler figs are a part of the ficus species and start life high up in the canopy, growing from a seed dropped by a bird onto another tree. From there, they send roots down toward the forest floor—slowly wrapping around their host tree as they grow. Over time, those roots thicken, fuse together, and can actually outcompete the original tree…leaving behind these jaw-dropping, sculptural root systems.

Some wild facts about fig trees:
🌱 They rely on a tiny, specialized wasp for pollination—each species of fig has its own matching wasp!
🌱 Their root systems can form natural bridges and archways, like the ones you see here.
🌱 Fig trees are considered a “keystone species” in many tropical forests because they provide food for wildlife year-round.

From Tree to Treasure!

Did you know your tree can have a second life?

This beautiful bench was crafted from a tree we recently removed—milled and repurposed right on-site into something functional and meaningful. Instead of hauling everything away, we love helping bring new life to the wood in creative ways like this.

If you have an idea for reusing a tree on your property, let’s talk! We have our own mill and can turn your removed tree into slabs for you to get creative with.

Your tree’s story doesn’t have to end with removal—it can be the start of something new. 💚
