Summer gardening means hauling a lot of things around, from plants and tools to trugs and mulch.

When I’m pulling my cart through the garden, I always remember to switch hands after a while. Small imbalances repeated over and over can wear one side of the body out surprisingly quickly.

The garden loves balance, and your body does, too!

One of the most important parts of staying GardenFit is knowing when to ask for help!

I took one look at this plant and knew it was too heavy for me to move safely alone, so I waited for a strong-looking helper to come by 😉

Gardening isn’t about proving how much you can carry; It’s about protecting your body so you can keep gardening for years to come. And remember, when you do lift together: Backs straight, spines stacked, lift with the legs.

Stay smart, and stay GardenFit!

I absolutely fell in love with this brass bucket and there was no way I wanted any water or soil ruining it, so I found a simple solution: A plastic bowl from the dollar store, tucked perfectly inside.

Now I can arrange plants easily, protect this beautful container, and lift the entire arrangement out to water and drain any excess safely (all while staying in GardenFit form, of course).

The best garden tricks don’t need to cost an arm and a leg to be useful time and time again!

So much of gardening happens in front of us, from planting to weeding to pruning. Over time, our shoulders can start to creep forward, too, but that can lead to a lot of pain down the road. This simple reset helps wake up the musles between your shoulder blades and gently open the chest again; little tweaks like this can completely change how your body feels in the garden!

Your hands do so much in the garden, and it’s crucial to keep them protected from thorns, irritating sap, rough leaves and stems, even hidden poison ivy (take my word for it, you do not want to be handling that). A great pair of gardening gloves is often overlooked, but they’re really important to help you protect your hands while staying efficient in your garden work.

Stay safe, stay comfortable, and stay GardenFit!

We break plenty of clay pots in the garden, but they never go to waste!

Broken pieces make wonderful drainage material for containers, and will help reduce how much soil you need to fill them. Drop into your armchair squat, stay limber with side to side movement, and work smarter to stay GardenFit.

I found a beautifully designed window box that I loved and decided to make it work for my own space! All it needed was a few well-placed stones to lift everything to just the right height.

I kept my spine long while planting, keeping my back protected and hinging from my hips to place the flowers; Sometimes gardening smarter is simply adjusting your setup before you begin.

Gardeners ask a lot of their wrists. We dig, we prune, we pull, we carry. So how can we keep them strong and mobile?

Follow along as Adam walks me through a great sequence of simple movements to help strengthen the wrists; it’s a gentle exercise now that will make a huge difference later!

The unsung hero of garden tools isn’t necessarily glamorous, but it is a must-have: a great kneepad.

Whether you’re on grass, stone, or hard-packed soil, your knees were never meant to absorb all that pressure. A little support goes a long way toward helping us garden comfortably for years to come.

Protect the body that keeps you in the garden!

I love mixing annuals into perennial borders because they keep the garden blooming beautifully all summer long. Before I dig, I like to place flags in the ground so I can step back, look around, and adjust the pattern until it feels right.

When it’s time to plant, I remember: hinge from the hips, keep the spine stacked, and dig with a plan!
