Reputation isn't built when everything goes right.

It's built when things go wrong.

When a project doesn't make sense.

When a repair doesn't solve the problem.

When documentation matters.

Over the years, I've learned that people don't hire me because I have all the answers.

They hire me because I have a process.

Observe.

Document.

Verify.

Only then draw conclusions.

That's exactly what I discuss in the newest episode of The Pool Envy® Podcast:

🎙️ Reputation Over Fame

Whether you work in construction, engineering, facility management, law, or simply appreciate doing things the right way, I hope you'll find something valuable in this conversation.

I'd love to hear your thoughts after listening.

Hello

Hello followers,

I'm Jason Davies, founder and Principal Consultant of Pool Envy®, and I'm fortunate to work alongside a great team of people.

Over the years, I've realized that many people understandably assume we're a traditional "pool repair company." While we certainly solve problems, that's not where our work begins.

Pool Envy® is a multi-state licensed swimming pool contractor with a consulting-first approach. Rather than starting with "what part needs to be replaced," we begin by understanding how the pool was designed, constructed, operates, and whether it aligns with applicable industry standards. We believe good decisions come from understanding the system and not guessing at the symptom.

Nearly every engagement begins with a paid Standards & Systems Evaluation (SSE). We evaluate the pool, its equipment, and related systems before recommending a path forward. Our philosophy is simple: a pool should be considered unsafe until it demonstrates otherwise.

That approach isn't for everyone and it is okay. Many owners simply need a routine repair or replacement, and there are excellent companies that specialize in that work. Our practice has evolved to focus on technical consultation, diagnostics, root-cause analysis, code and standards evaluation, and helping clients make informed decisions before investing in repairs.

A growing part of our work also involves assisting attorneys, insurance professionals, property owners, contractors, and organizations with technically complex swimming pool matters, including construction disputes, defect investigations, and litigation consulting.

As our work is consultation-driven, our scheduling and response times may differ from those of a traditional break-fix service company. We intentionally devote the time necessary to understand each matter before offering recommendations. While that approach isn't always the fastest, we believe it's the most responsible.

As Pool Envy® continues to grow, I simply wanted to provide a little more clarity about who we are, how we approach our work, and why we do things the way we do.

Thank you to everyone who has trusted us over the years. We appreciate the opportunity to serve you.

Wisconsin is updating its electrical code.

Beginning September 1, 2026, Wisconsin will adopt the 2023 National Electrical Code (NEC) for electrical installations.

For swimming pools, Wisconsin appears to have adopted the 2023 requirements of NEC Article 680, including expanded GFCI protection requirements for pool equipment.

Wisconsin also retained two state-specific provisions for listed self-contained spas and hot tubs with nonmetallic walls, exempting them from certain bonding requirements involving perimeter surfaces and pool water bonding.

What does this mean in the real world?

If you own—or are thinking about buying—a home with a swimming pool, this update matters.

Likewise, hotels, apartments, HOAs, municipalities, schools, and commercial pool operators should begin planning now.

Many older pools have operated safely for years without GFCI protection on equipment that was compliant when originally installed. However, when a pool pump or motor is replaced or modified after the new code takes effect, additional electrical upgrades may be required, depending on the scope of the work and the existing installation.

What was once a straightforward equipment replacement could become a project requiring additional electrical work, permits, and inspections.

Waiting until a pump fails may turn an emergency repair into a larger electrical project. Evaluating older equipment now can help owners understand potential future costs and avoid unexpected downtime.

For prospective homebuyers, this is another reason why a comprehensive swimming pool inspection is valuable. Understanding the condition of the pool and its electrical system before closing can help avoid surprises after you take ownership.

As always, the specific code requirements depend on the scope of work and the existing installation, but now is a good time for owners and facility managers to begin evaluating older pool equipment before the new code takes effect.

Pentair says you cannot mix vent types when venting a master temp. The installer did not allow that to get in the way. He finished on time. Please, follow code and instructions. NFPA-54 will thank you.
