Old houses usually come with a few quirks—and this one was no exception.

What started as a simple door replacement quickly turned into a major repair. Once things were opened up, we found rot in several areas along with some questionable DIY building methods.

Truth be told, the root of the issue started with the grading around the house. The original grade was level with the concrete slab instead of sitting several inches below it to help prevent water intrusion. Because of this, every major rainstorm pushed water underneath the wall and straight into the home.

All of these factors created a unique challenge: how to make a solid, long-lasting repair without spending tens of thousands.

We replaced the rotten boards with pressure-treated lumber and added flashing details to help prevent future rot. The siding was updated with LP SmartSide panels to match the existing board-and-batten look. After installation, we sealed everything using Big Stretch and LEXEL from Sashco Inc..

High-quality materials make a big difference—but proper installation matters just as much. If the original install had been done correctly, most of this could have been avoided.

In the end, everything came together, and our customer can now enjoy peace of mind knowing this issue has been properly taken care of.

This project took a little longer than we expected.

Typically, a shower remodel like this takes us about 3–5 days. In this case, it took closer to 8 days to get everything done right. The space itself was quite small, making it difficult for both of us to work at the same time — but that turned out to be the least of our challenges.

⏱️ Among a few other issues, the shower door installation — which should have taken no more than two hours — ended up taking over four. Definitely not ideal, but what matters most is how we handled and overcame those setbacks.

✨ In the end, our customer now has a space that not only looks great, but functions beautifully — one that can adapt as their needs change and continue to serve them well for years to come.

Handrails are done! 🙌
We’re absolutely thrilled with how these turned out!

Our customer chose an aluminum handrail from TimberTech, and it was an excellent choice. The sleek, modern look pairs perfectly with the decking color and really brings the space together.

More importantly, that’s a wrap on this deck build! 🎉 We’re grateful for the opportunity to take on this project. This one taught us so much, and we can’t wait to put what we’ve learned into our next builds.

On to the next one! 🔨

Decking and fascia all wrapped up! ✅

It took a ton of thought and work to get everything just right, but man does it look good! The hidden fasteners give it a clean, polished look, and the fascia really dresses up the entire structure.

Next up: handrails—then this project will be officially wrapped! 🔨👏

And just like that—blocking and coating are done! 🙌

We added two rows of blocking in the main section to make sure everything stays rock solid. Believe it or not, that extra row goes a long way in minimizing “bounce” in the joists. The shorter section only needed one row, and the spacing between all the blocking worked out evenly at about 5 feet between each row—a nice little detail.

Next, we rolled on the deck frame coating anywhere rot typically occurs or where water may sit for extended periods of time. It’s a little messy, but well worth it in terms of time savings. In just over an hour, we’re able to coat every surface—compared to half a day or more using traditional joist tape.

One of the biggest benefits is minimizing how much we’re walking across the joists. Walking joists is tough to begin with, but being able to stand in one spot and roll the membrane over a large area makes the process much easier—and safer. Joist tape can be very slippery, but we haven’t had nearly the same issue once this coating dries.

Up next: installing the fascia and picture-frame border! 👌

Such a satisfying way to end the week! 🙌
In just two days, we completed all the major framing.

Day One: All the joists in the main section were installed with the hanger brackets in place. Over a 16-foot span, we stayed impressively parallel—within 1/32 of an inch—close enough that any variance won’t matter.

Day Two: We framed the landings and stairs, which went much faster than expected. Every set of stairs we build gets quicker and cleaner. Stairs usually take the longest to dial in, but this time we marked, cut, and installed the stringers in less time than it took to build either of the two landings.

Next up: installing blocking, then rolling on the deck frame coating! 🛠️

Sometimes small, annoying setbacks are just that—small and annoying.

The further we got into our lumber pile, the more we realized how little of it was actually usable. Between major knots in our stair stringers and several boards that shouldn’t have even made it out of the sawmill, it became clear pretty quickly. One board was obviously rotten all the way down the middle, and the one below it was starting to get soft in the same spot. There were also large bark inclusions and boards where the milling machines had gouged out big sections along the edges.

Those issues wouldn’t have been a huge deal if we were using standard decking, but the hidden fastener system we’re using really requires the full width of each board to stay true—so those boards simply wouldn’t cut it.

Usually, hand-picking lumber helps avoid these problems, but in this case, the sheer volume we needed made delivery the best option. Thankfully, the supplier we work with was incredibly helpful and had better lumber delivered the very next day.

In the end, it worked out well. The days we were waiting on lumber would’ve been rain-out days anyway, so we didn’t lose much productivity.

All in all—small and annoying, but maybe better than what could’ve been.

Framing this beast has been surprisingly *less* challenging than we expected. At its highest point, the deck is elevated well over 10 feet, which means most of the framing is done overhead. While lifting 14-foot 2x10s that high is definitely a workout, we were pleasantly surprised by how quickly—and how level—it all came together.

We also applied a waterproof membrane to the tops of all our posts to keep water from soaking into the end grain and eventually causing rot. Once all the framing is up, we’ll apply the same coating to all horizontal surfaces where water could potentially sit for long periods of time.

The short section of the end joist won’t go up until the joists in the main deck are installed. The hill we’re working on is pretty tough to navigate, so leaving that section off for now gives us easier access.

All in all, we’re excited to keep watching this thing take shape! 💪🏗️

Next project: building a sweet elevated deck! 🔨

The steep hill and elevated structure made the demo a bit challenging, but thankfully everything went smoothly with no major hang-ups.

Huge shoutout to our friend Graham at for hooking us up with a dumpster—this saved us hours of driving and multiple trips to the landfill. 🙌

If you’re in the Upstate SC area and need a dumpster, we highly recommend giving him a call!
