Pick a 70 degree morning this month and run your heat for 15 minutes.

You'll probably smell burning dust. That's normal. It's what settled on the heat exchanger or the electric strips over the summer, cooking off, and it should clear within about 15 minutes.

What isn't normal is a smell still hanging around after 20 minutes, or anything like hot plastic or scorched wiring. Shut it down if you get that.

Finding a heat problem on a mild September morning means you schedule a repair. Finding it on the first 32 degree night in November means waiting in line with half of Greenville County.

Most of what we find in September is minor. That's the point of looking now.

A filter that normally lasts 90 days can load up in 30 right now.

Ragweed started throwing pollen across the Upstate in mid-August and won't stop until the first frost, usually late October. The next two weeks are the peak.

Your filter does catch it. Ragweed grains run about 20 microns, large enough that a basic MERV 8 handles them. Volume is the problem, since one plant releases roughly a billion grains in a season.

Pull yours out this week and hold it up to a light. If light doesn't come through, the system is fighting the filter, not the weather.

You don't need a more expensive filter for this. You need a fresh one more often.

Five companies told Nick he needed a new $15k system. We told him it could be repaired.

Honest answer: the $15k job would've been a better week for us. That just wasn't the best option for Nick at the time.

We'll always lay out both options, repair vs replace, with the pros and cons of each. Then we go with whatever the homeowner feels is the best option for them.

Thanks Nick. Appreciate you giving us a look after five other opinions and for writing this up!

Surf report for this Greenville shed: 72 and glassy, every day, all year.

The closest wave is four hours away, but the boards don't know that. Mini split installed, and now the surfboards, the kayaks, and one very lucky lawn mower are riding out summer in AC.

No ductwork, one wall unit, usually a one day install. Shed, garage, bonus room, workshop. If it turns into an oven in July, we can fix that.

These nine rooftop units just got more attention in one morning than most units get in five years.

Coils cleaned, filters swapped, belts and electrical checked, refrigerant verified, on six 25-ton and three 5-ton Trane gas package units. They'll return the favor in August when everyone else's building is calling for emergency service.

To the dads who run the grill, the garage, and the thermostat with an iron fist: today is your day.

Thanks for fixing what broke, showing up when it counts, and being the coolest dude in the house. You're the reason this place always feels like home.

Happy Fathers Day from our team at First Class Heating & Air!

Cameron looks like he's defusing a bomb. He's actually just wiring up a brand new Bosch 18 SEER2 variable speed package unit for a first time Greenville homeowner.

Every one of those wires has a job. Low voltage to the thermostat, high voltage to the disconnect, sensor leads for the inverter board and if you cross two of them, the unit either doesn't run or runs real exciting. No pressure, Cam. 😅

Quick plain English breakdown of what this homeowner is getting:
Package unit = heating, cooling, and blower all in one outdoor cabinet. No air handler in a closet, no lineset snaking through the crawlspace. Great fit for slab homes and manufactured homes.

Variable speed = the compressor modulates instead of slamming on full blast every 12 minutes. Quieter, more even temperatures room to-room, and your power bill notices.

18 SEER2 = efficient enough that this homeowner basically stops thinking about their HVAC. Which, if you've ever been burned by a contractor, is the whole point.

Anyone else closed on a house this spring? What's the first thing you upgraded?

Today isn't about the long weekend or the cookout. It's about the people who didn't come home.

Memorial Day is for the service members who gave their lives so the rest of us could keep living ours. Going to work, being with our families, building something of our own. None of that is free, and we don't take it for granted.

To the families who lost someone, we're thinking of you today and every day.

Thank you will never be enough. But thank you, all the same.

From our team at First Class Heating & Air.
