Bradford pears were introduced to the U.S. in the 1960s as a “sterile” ornamental. Fast growing, symmetrical, covered in white blooms every spring and cities and developers planted them everywhere.

The problem? They weren’t sterile. Different cultivars cross-pollinated, escaped cultivation, and now they’re one of the most invasive trees across the South and Midwest.

They split in storms.
They smell terrible in bloom.
They outcompete native species.
They form dense thickets in pastures and woodlines.

The bigger issues - they don’t really give anything back.

Very little wildlife value compared to native species. No meaningful food production for your family. Weak wood. Short lifespan. They’re a perfect example of landscaping built for appearance instead of function.

If you’re planting a tree, make it count.

Plant edible trees like apples, pears, peaches, persimmons, and pawpaw. Feed your family. Increase your resilience.
Plant native trees like oaks, hickories, serviceberries, redbuds. Support pollinators. Support birds. Strengthen your regional ecosystem.
Plant something that builds soil, creates shade intentionally, and produces long-term value. Value that can extend beyond our own lifespans.
