One of the largest Overcup Oak trees that we have moved in sometime. Fortunately we could relocate this tree on site and didn’t have to take it down the highway and under the power lines with that large canopy. Beautiful tree that was relocated from a parking lot island to a landscaped area near Lake Laupus for people to enjoy in the future.

Sure, it’s been a while since we have had time to post any content from the projects that we are known for, we’ve just been so busy that we haven’t made the time to post any fun projects. We will try to be better about that in the future.

Here is a glimpse of us starting the new medical education building at the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University. We were able to salvage many trees including River Birch, Hollie’s, Willow Oaks, Overcup Oaks, and even a few camellias. The new construction of the 195,000 square foot building would have wiped out many of these trees and we were able to salvage and relocate them on site and on the main campus of East Carolina University. Trees that were able to be saved without utilities underneath them were able to be saved for future generations to enjoy.

It’s a quote that most people take a lifetime to understand and it is typically only in later life that a person realize the important part of planning for the future and sitting in the shade of a tree preciously planted by someone else.

The Greek proverb goes:

"A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit.".

Thanks to those of us who can plan ahead!

Have you ever had an onlooker at work that just would not get out of your way and just hung around all day no matter what danger they may have put themselves in? ARRRRGUABLY, one of the more interesting tree removals in a while with the constant onlooker, everything went well and was removed without any issues. This aged oak had developed several hollows from previous years damage and was at a point of no return to a safe status. Once removed, the threat to pedestrians and even the pirate was resolved and a few more trees will now be planted to replace the aged oak.

(Don’t worry there were still several large oaks around to keep the pirate with some shade!)

It’s on days like today that you do not regret the decisions that you may have previously struggled with. When we got asked to give our opinion of this particular large red oak tree, we were reluctant to give it a definite need for removal. Upon further inspection we would find that the tree was in worse shape that we realized. To prune out the weak spots and to try and compartmentalize the tree to save what was still viable and had certain longevity would leave the tree lopsided and weakened leading to an even further liability.

When we were able to start cutting at the top canopy of the tree we would realize that the damage was much more extensive and that the need for complete removal was our only option for safety reasons. In the photos you can tell of hypoxylon fungal issues present in the tree bark and many cavities and fissures that would have left this tree vulnerable to high wind loads and increase the damage of it splitting.

The property underneath the canopy of this tree is lined with sidewalks and adjoins a well used parking lot, so the number of targets of people and property were many. Once the trunk was cut into the tree began to pour out water and tannins that indicated a deep fissure running down the trunk. We had made the correct call, but often times it is not realized until we have inclement weather like we will be having today.

The sentimental value and historical value of the trees is pertinent to me. I believe personally that these trees were planted as part of a project in the downtown area many years prior, when Greenville was experiencing significant growth to that area. I’m sad to see it have to be removed but thankful today knowing that we made the right decision has been eliminated the potential for someone to become hurt from the storms coming through.

One benefit of being reliable and producing a high quality product is the repeat business that often comes with those attributes. This client had us perform a landscape addition and renovation in fall of 2009 and throughout the years we have done additional upfits and changes as requested.

The home had existing centipede sod in 2009, and as our winter climate has changed that was causing fungal issues in centipede turf grass it was time for a change in the turf. The landscape has began to mature, many of the larger willow oak trees have began spreading out there canopy and root systems which further limited the ability for the grass to grow. We put together a plan about a year prior to get the soil prepared to the level it needed to be. We had low ph issues and micro nutrient decencies.

Our plan was to spray out all of the old centipede sod and once it was dead the renovation process could begin. We stripped off the old sod and prepared the soil incorporating the necessary nutrient and biological materials we would need for a healthy turf. We selected a very shade tolerant zoysia sod that could exist in the landscape design and continue to thrive as the landscape continues to mature. The before and after photos tell the tale, all of these photos are straight off of the iPhone camera and non-filtered.

The rewarding part isn’t always about profits, it’s about relationships. We have the joy of helping achieve other people’s dreams and creating some beautiful, living artwork in the process. It’s a lot of work, a lot of experience and thought goes into projecting what the future will one day become when working with nature, but the results are worth all the effort.

I’ve learned in life, you only have a brief time here and your v***r of life will one day dissipate. We try to take every moment and make it precious and meaningful. When opportunity presents itself, you can take it or leave it, and today I took the opportunity to entertain my sidekick in planting her first live oak tree. A great repeat customer had called wanting to relocate another tree on the homestead and I was able to pick up my oldest daughter Sydney after school and take her on an adventure to leave her mark on the world. She was a little over dressed for the work at hand but she modeled the product beautifully. The customer even stated that with a picture that pretty, you should be able to sell 25 more trees!

So if you are in need of a tree, call us at (252)-830-1067!

You don’t get better by taking the easy ones, you get better when you overcome the next challenge.

When you have come across a task such as this, there is nothing you can do about the damage that has already occurred from the storm, or from the decay of Mother Nature. You have to at this point minimize any further damage in the removal process. This large water oak had a co-dominate central leader and with age and deteriorating crotch angles, the tree split in a brief wind storm a while back. The main part of the tree was healthy but the other two failed due to their branching pattern and the decay formed at the base of the crotch. The two trunks broke off and landed on several out buildings and fencing. Fortunately, the damage was not life threatening, and the limbs had held the tree slightly up off of the buildings in some places and rested in the ridge pole of the buildings on others.

Our job was to safely remove the damage without causing further damage to the property. It becomes a chess game of sorts, with natural products that are prone to decay and abnormalities. Working in tight areas with minimal equipment access was interesting, but in the end we laid the main stem of the tree perfectly thru the four foot wide gate in the fence without and additional damage.

You build your skill, one experience at a time.

You just hope you can master the next challenge and find a challenge worthy of your experience!

This was another busy week for shoring up Lake Laupus at the Health Science Campus of East Carolina University. This water feature element of our campus is not only aesthetically pleasing, it’s a tool used for surface water restriction and collection.

This pond actually catches many hundreds of thousands of gallons of rainwater from buildings, surface runoff and parking lots and funnels and filters the water before it is spilt thru a channel into the tar river basin. Over time erosion had collapsed some of the earthen embankments where there were no trees to establish a root structure to hold the soil together.

Our teams were able to stabilize the embankments with the use of geo-textile fabrics and quarried granite stone and boulders to add armor to the embankment and prevent further erosion. A few native ornamental grasses are dotted around the landscape for future root establishment, even though the geese have just found a new buffet.

When you have a moment, swing by the corner of Moye Boulevard and 5th street in Greenville, North Carolina and walk the asphalt pathways around the pond and take in one of our cities green space!
