These three Kercheval projects in Grosse Pointe Park have had businesses that have turned over, which really speaks to our philosophy of designing, long-range, community-specific buildings. One hundred-year solutions, designs that reflect the character of the area, not just the specific business, stand the test of time. The Robot Garage design needed few changes on the exterior to turn it into Bricks Pizza, same for Fusion Fitness/Detroit Barber, and Cornwall Bakery.

Corner of Kercheval and Lakepointe

The former Grace United Church, a non-denominational church designed by Robert O. Derrick, was built in 1936.

Unfortunately, it had fallen into disrepair by the time our client purchased it. But the building was historically significant and still had great bones. . .

We reimagined the church’s interior. The brewer felt good about putting the beer vats on the alter. We renovated and repurposed everything we could. The stained glass was repaired and enhanced by a local craftsperson and the old pews became booth seating. We designed the new bar, and a new addition to house the new commercial elevator (hey, kegs are heavy!), and new stairway, added a new commercial kitchen, private dining with a fireplace, and restrooms. As with any old building, a big challenge was making it all ADA compliant. Outside we added a new bar and the Biergarten, capped off by the decorative fencing and gate. This is a fun destination, set for the next 100 years.

Fun story: A friend called Rob about a year after Atwater’s opened and told him he had just been there for the most fun wedding and reception he had ever attended. Seems the bride had promised her father she’d get married in a church!!

15301 Kercheval
Red Crown Restaurant

The original iconic Mobile Gas Station had sat empty and dormant for at least a dozen years before our client bought it with the idea of turning it into a restaurant.

The design challenge was to bring it up to restaurant and ADA standards while maintaining the historic integrity of the building. We tried to keep everything as original as possible and yet make it appealing to diners. Today, it's a vibrant and fun destination. Check it out next time you are in the area.

RWA was proud to be part of this project.

73 Kercheval
Did you know the office for the Icelandic Honorary Consulate is on The Hill? Neither did we until they called us and asked us to do a complete renovation of the exterior of their building. Which, by the way, actually started as two buildings. One was built in the 1920s and one was built some thirty years later. I bet Benjamin Gravel can give us the background here too. Rob looked to Grosse Pointe’s French and English heritage to create the design for this new historic-looking building.

Normally, RWA tries to create our building exteriors keeping in mind that businesses turn over, but on this building, we couldn’t resist adding an etching of the Icelandic crest in the new transom over the front door.

112 Kercheval

We did this project with one of our favorite clients, and it remains one of our favorite buildings we designed in Grosse Pointe.
The Project:
The client wanted to add a second floor to his building, but the existing structure would not support it, so the original building had to be demolished. The client wanted the design for the new two-story building to be a charming, historic-looking building that would add to the character of the Hill. They loved what Rob came up with. This building has two private entrances on Kercheval, is completely barrier-free, has a private elevator, and has its own enclosed garage on the rear/alley side. Builder: Chris Blake Builders.

120-130 Kercheval

The last of the three Bookends RWA designed on the Hill was really the first building, set of buildings actually, we designed on the Hill. And one of the last projects we did with Robert B. Wood, Sr. as a consultant from Harbor Springs.

The Project:

One: Renovate 130 Kercheval, a large, tired, old, nondescript building that had been many things over the years. Who remembers when it was a Lincoln-Mercury Dealership? Benjamin Gravel do you have the history of the original building and of the dealership?

And two: Create a new building design for Northern Trust Bank that would be constructed in the adjacent parking lot at 120 Kercheval.

RWA wanted the designs of 130 Kercheval and 120 Kercheval to work in harmony with each other and the surrounding buildings, look like they had always been there, and capture the character of the Grosse Pointe community. Creating character in both buildings where none had existed.

Rob and Bob Wood wanted to break up the massing on the large front façade to be more charming and more pedestrian friendly. A great deal of thought went into the scale, balance, proportion, texture, color, and overall designs of both buildings. In executing the vision RWA worked with the Client to make this a long-term/100-year solution. They used premium materials, real limestone, and master craftsmen to pull it off. The Clients were delighted with the result. We think it still looks beautiful 20 years later, hopefully, you agree!
Builder: Frank Rewold and Sons with Russell Development.

66 Kercheval
Here’s another Bookend RWA designed for the Hill. It sits directly across Kercheval from 63.

The Project:
5/3 Bank wanted to open their first branch in the Pointes. They bought the old Standard on the Hill site and initially went to Farms City Council with a building design from their usual Architectural firm out of Ohio. The Farms City Council turned them down. They felt the proposed designs did not fit our community.

The Council suggested 5/3 Bank call RWA to see what Rob could come up with, so they did. Rob felt that the building design needed to look historic, it needed to have character, it needed to be community-specific, stand up to and complement the surrounding buildings, and be a 100-year solution. He once again wanted to keep the massing down as the adjacent building only had one story. The inspiration for his new design was an old train depot. Rob was able to create a whole new historic Normandy-style look and feel for the exterior with only minor modifications to the floor plan, in time for the next City Council meeting. It was approved, unanimously.

Fun detail: The neighbors asked where they would be getting their bike tires filled once the old gas station was torn down. We asked 5/3 Bank if the new building could include an air hose, of course they said yes. So, if you’re on the Hill and your bike needs air in the tires, stop by 5/3 Bank, it’s in the back on the way to the drive-through. Builder: Barton Malow.
