Happy Saturday, gardeners!

We're excited to announce two new species that we currently have in stock (in limited quantities).

Bretonica Peluda (Melochia spicata): A sister species to the much-beloved Tea Bush, this groundcover grows no taller than 12", but can form dense mats and will crowd out other species in mixed beds if not given room to spread. It thrives in full sun and dry sandy soil, and is a perennial in much of the state but should be treated as an annual in north Florida.

Comfortroot (Sabdariffa aculeata, formerly Hibiscus aculeata): A close relative of Hibiscus (now Muenchhusia), this perennial wildflower can grow anywhere from 3' to 6' feet tall and up to 3' wide. The flowers are white with a rich pink center, and it serves as a larval host to several butterflies and moths including the Gray Hairstreak, Painted Lady, and Common Checkered Skipper. It's also a valuable nectar source for a variety of pollinators.

Come by and see them for yourself!

Good afternoon, gardeners! In celebration of Earth Day today and Arbor Day on Friday, we'll be offering a special on some of our trees. On Friday and Saturday, retail customers with transactions over $200 will get their choice of a free Eagleston Holly (Ilex x attenuata 'Eagleston') or Myrtle Oak (Quercus myrtifolia) while supplies last.

Eagleston Holly is a long-lived evergreen tree that thrives in moist sandy or loamy soils with full or part sun. It can grow anywhere from 20' to 25' feet tall, and is a hybrid of our native Dahoon (I. cassine) and American (I. opaca) Hollies. They're self-fertile and produce plentiful red berries in the fall which are a favorite of birds.

Myrtle Oak are another long-lived evergreen tree that performs best in full to part sun, but it prefers dry sandy soils and is drought-tolerant. It can grow anywhere from 10' to 30' tall and potentially as wide. The acorns are a food source for various types of wildlife including birds and mammals, and the foliage feeds Horace's Duskywing, Red-banded and White-m hairstreak butterfly caterpillars among others.

Whether your yard is upland or wetland, we've got you covered! Pictured: Eagleston Holly leaves, blooms and a bonus assassin bug, Eagleston Holly leaves and blooms, and Myrtle Oak leaves.
