🐜 Keep Critters Out of Your Outdoor AC Condenser! 🦎🐭

Your outdoor condenser can become a cozy home for ants, spiders, rodents, lizards, and other unwanted guests. Unfortunately, these pests can damage electrical components, clog airflow, and lead to costly repairs. Here are some simple tips to help keep them away:

✅ Keep Vegetation Trimmed

Maintain at least 2-3 feet of clearance around your condenser.
Trim bushes, weeds, and tall grass that can provide shelter for pests.

✅ Remove Debris Regularly

Clear away leaves, mulch, sticks, and grass clippings.
Debris creates hiding spots and traps moisture that attracts insects.

✅ Use Ant Control Around the Unit

Apply ant bait stations around (not inside) the condenser.
Fire ants are notorious for invading contactors and capacitors.

✅ Inspect Electrical Openings

Have a technician check for gaps where insects can enter the electrical compartment.
Small openings can be sealed appropriately during maintenance.

✅ Avoid Storing Items Near the Unit

Don't stack firewood, boxes, pots, or outdoor equipment next to the condenser.
These items attract rodents and insects looking for shelter.

✅ Control Moisture

Fix leaking hose bibs, irrigation systems, or drainage issues nearby.
Standing water attracts insects and other pests.

✅ Schedule Preventive Maintenance

A professional inspection can catch insect nests, ant infestations, damaged wiring, and airflow restrictions before they become major problems.

⚠️ Did You Know?
Ants are one of the leading causes of capacitor and contactor failures in outdoor HVAC units. When ants crawl between electrical contacts, they can create a short circuit and cause your system to stop cooling.

🏠 A little prevention can save you from a hot summer breakdown!

❄️ IS YOUR AIR CONDITIONER LEAKING REFRIGERANT? ❄️

Your HVAC system should never "use up" refrigerant. If it's low, there's usually a leak somewhere in the system. Here are some common signs to watch for:

🚨 Your home isn't cooling like it used to

🧊 Ice forming on the indoor coil or refrigerant lines

💨 Hissing or bubbling sounds coming from the unit

💰 Higher-than-normal electric bills

⏰ Your system runs longer and struggles to reach the thermostat setting

🛢️ Oily residue around refrigerant lines or connections

Ignoring a refrigerant leak can lead to compressor damage, costly repairs, and reduced comfort in your home.

At A Degree Above Heating & Air, our technicians can perform a professional leak check, pinpoint the problem, and get your system back to cooling efficiently.

Tips and Tricks to help keep the home cooler during the Texas HEAT
Keeping your home cool during the summer isn’t just about comfort—it also helps lower your energy bills and reduces strain on your HVAC system. A few simple habits can make a big difference when the heat kicks in.

Start by keeping blinds or curtains closed during the hottest part of the day, especially on sun-facing windows. This helps block out heat before it even enters your home. Using ceiling fans can also help circulate cool air more efficiently, allowing you to raise your thermostat a few degrees without feeling warmer.

Make sure your air filters are clean, since a clogged filter forces your system to work harder and cool less effectively. Sealing up any air leaks around doors and windows will also keep that cold air from escaping.

Another smart move is to avoid heat-producing activities like baking or running the dryer during peak afternoon hours. Instead, try cooking early or later in the evening when temperatures drop.

Finally, setting your thermostat a little higher when you’re away—and using a programmable or smart thermostat—can keep your system efficient while still keeping your home comfortable when you return.

Small changes like these add up quickly, helping you stay cool all summer long without overworking your system.
