Sprout Farms & Gardens

Sprout Farms & Gardens Specializing in urban, sustainable, edible and biodiverse gardens. Since 1999, owner and lead designer, Dave Chalek has worked in the field of Horticulture.

Dave’s professional experience has ranged from design and installation of ornamental landscapes, to backyard edible gardens and romantic sanctuaries, to rooftop gardens and urban retreats, to farming in the desert mountains, to building a farmer’s market styled store with a glass greenhouse and outdoor nursery. Dave’s vast experience showed him that the quest to beautify our spaces often comes at

the expense of our delicate ecosystem. Wanting to solve this problem, Sprout’s business model was born. Dave is a member of the New York Botanical Gardens, the New York Environmental Group and Greenpeace. Dave lives on Long Island with his wife and business partner and two rescue dogs.

Checking in on the native garden at the Peace Labyrinth in Teaneck Creek Park.

Some things in full bloom helping out the mid August pollinators, some just starting while others begin to fade.

Seed heads begging to ripen to feed the birds through the fall and into the winter.

A grasshopper hanging out in the wild strawberry patch. A favorite hiding place of small critters and insects.

Come check out the new rain catchment structure for the rain barrel at the Teaneck Creek Conservancy. Sprout made entirely from reclaimed materials and wood harvested from fallen trees in the park.

Once upon a time this beautiful park was the Teaneck garbage dump so it seemed fitting to use some left behind debris for a new project. The conservancy strives to be a as sustainable as possible while establishing the wetlands habitat.

The posts were hand split and carved from a fallen choke cherry tree (Prunus serotina), 50% of the lumber was left behind from the restoration, 50% was from junked oak pallets. The roof was pulled out from one of the ponds by the W**d Warriors, the concrete bases and a piece of the gutter were from past projects in the park. The only things we brought in were screws, one piece of gutter, an elbow and metal bases for the posts to rest on.

The project was sponsored by the Jack Flamholz Water Sustainability Project, who also provided both of our rain barrels.
