**** On cold days where temperatures drop below 20°F, avoid turning down your thermostat at night or during the day when you leave.
When you drop your thermostat setting even a couple degrees, the hot water in your heating system stops circulating for long periods. The problem? Stationary water freezes much faster than moving water.
Wood stoves, pellet stoves, propane fireplaces, and mini split heat pumps work very well at heating one room but can result in a frozen pipe on the far end of the zone, especially if the supplementary heat source is located in the same room as the thermostat. Avoid using these on the coldest days unless absolutely necessary. ****
