Weekly Ideas Day

This week we are tackling the spring rains with a simple erosion control berm.

If you have a slope that keeps washing away our railroad ties are the ultimate solution. Their weight and size create a permanent barrier that holds soil in place and protects your property from the elements.

Here is how to get started:
Step 1: Identify the area where the water flow is most aggressive.
Step 2: Dig a trench along the base of the slope about 5 inches deep.
Step 3: Lay your ties into the trench and use a mallet to set them deep into the soil.
Step 4: Backfill the area behind the ties with gravel or heavy mulch to slow the water down.
Step 5: For steep hills stack a second row on top and secure them with rebar.
