Before a blackberry is a blackberry, it’s a flower.
Our blackberry canes are bursting with blooms! Each with five delicate petals, usually white and sometimes blushed pink, framing a yellow center packed with tiny pistils.

Each of those pistils holds a secret: if pollinated, it will become a single drupelet, one of the juicy beads that together form the berry.

Then come the bees. Honeybees, bumblebees, and native solitary bees arrive for nectar and pollen, and their visits matter more than you’d think. Blackberries are largely self-fertile, but good bee traffic dramatically improves the fruit.

Poorly pollinated berries turn out lumpy or crumbly because some drupelets never developed. A well-visited blossom can yield a berry with 80 to 100 drupelets, each a miniature fruit in its own right.

Once pollination is done, the petals have served their purpose. They wither and fall, revealing a tiny green k**b at the flower’s heart. Over the next 4 to 6 weeks, it swells, blushes red, and deepens into the glossy black-purple we know, sweetened by sunlight and the plant’s slow alchemy of sugars and anthocyanins.

Bloom. Invite. Let go. Ripen.

A reminder that some of the most beautiful stages of growth are the ones that have to fall away to make room for the fruit.

Taking a stroke through Block 1 Row 33 and our plants are coming in looking very healthy for this season!

We’ve taken a lot of measures to nourish our soil and plants this year while not using ANY Herbicides or Glyphosate!!

When the plant is healthier it will produce delicious sweet and firm fruit!

We have a lot of labor hours to put in to make up for not using Herbicides/glyphosate.
