Pepper Guru Traveling the World in Search of Peppers

My main curiosity was soil biology and it’s role in growing the healthiest plants possible. In 1994 I planted some Thai Dragon peppers in our garden and my dad would dare me to try them before he would eat them. chinense pepper was at the age of 16. That fruity, smoky, citrusy burst, followed by an extreme heat, was unlike anything I had ever tasted in my garden before. This new world of flavors s

parked what would become a life long infatuation and set me on a quest, Traveling The World In Search of Peppers. Fast forward to present with nearly 30 years of cultivation experience, field collections abroad, trades and friendships made, the pepper community looks much different than it did back in the 1990’s. I’ve administrated some of the world’s largest cultivation forums and continue to share my passion with other pepper enthusiasts across various platforms. I now travel the world in search of my favorite pepper varieties from their region of origin. Nothing is more rewarding than hand picking peppers in each village, farm or hidden trail we discover on our adventures along the way. The people we meet and the friendships we make are what truly breathes life into our journey. The shared passion for peppers across so many different cultures may just be the key to understanding that we are all more alike than we realize.

It’s not always good, all the time. Here’s one of the reasons we recommend sowing more seed than you intend on planting out. Having back up plants is crucial for turning disaster into a small hiccup. This plant is done for. Dampening off over night from all this rain we’ve been having. For whatever reason, whatever fungus or mold did this plant in, liked it better than its siblings in the same conditions. So, we pull a backup plant, toss this one, and keep rocking. Hopefully the rain cuts us a break soon.

What’s your favorite substrate to grow peppers in? This is mine. 100% Compost made out of Bermuda grass clippings, livestock bedding, and a small bit of sand and silt from tumbling in the field rows. No peat, no perlite, no vermiculite. You don’t need aerators if your substrate has the right structure.

When did you first hear about, grow or get to taste Bhut Jolokia peppers? I remember my first time. I walked into Atlantis Hydroponics near the Atlanta airport and a friend was growing a giant plant in a flood table. The seeds had been brought back from the Assam region. I’ll never forget the unique and iconic flavors that these peppers had. Much different than other super hot C. Chinense. (Interspecifics) There is an unmistakable aroma that emanates from these fruit when opened that no other super hot has. Almost a funky, cheesy, body odor aroma (but in a good way). Slightly fruity but very funk dominant. Tell us about your first experience with these Asian super hots down below in the comments!

Ever seen a mutant pepper plant? They are sought after for their alien, needle like foliage and wild flower morphology. Often expressing dwarfed structures with mishappen fruit shapes. A real collectors dream. Perfect for ornamental flower beds or your favorite front porch decorative planter. Pictured here is Blue Christmas x Candlelight Mutant.

Growing great pepper plants, season after season, is easier than most people tend to believe.

All you need to focus on, are the pepper growing fundamentals - The range of ideal conditions for Capsicum that result in the fastest growing, most productive plants.

Lots of light (more than most people believe), lots of root space, lots of nutrient availability (I input at 3-1-2) in a soil (I prefer living) that’s kept at a proper moisture level at all times (not dripping wet but not crumbly dry), and temperatures between 65-95F. These conditions create Pepper Grow Mode.

If you can figure out how to adhere to those requirements listed above, regardless of where you live, almost anyone can grow great pepper plants like this in a few short months. You don’t need a science degree to grow great pepper plants like this:

9 years later… 🥚
Dug up our 2017 compost pile today and found these eggshells still almost completely intact. Alongside peanut shells, biochar, chicken manure, and kitchen scraps.
If you’re hoping crushed eggshells in the garden will save your peppers from blossom end rot… this is the reality. They break down extremely slowly (often years). Not a quick calcium fix.
Better moves: consistent watering, proper soil testing, and actual fast-acting amendments.
Compost your eggshells anyway. They’ll help eventually, but don’t count on them as a BER cure. Nature’s slower than we think!
