Why Does My HVAC Drain Line Keep Clogging? ☕️ SATURDAY MORNINGS: Ask Lee!
We get this question a lot from homeowners across Hampton Roads and the Peninsula—especially during peak AC season.
Every Saturday morning, Lee answers one of your real HVAC questions right here.
Today’s Question:
“Why does my AC drain line keep clogging?”
Lee’s Answer:
Your air conditioner doesn’t just cool your home—it removes moisture too.
That moisture has to drain somewhere, and over time, your condensate drain line can clog with buildup.
Common causes include:
✅ Algae or slime growth inside the drain line
✅ Dust and debris mixing with moisture over time
✅ A dirty system creating extra buildup
✅ Drain line design issues or poor slope
Signs you may have a clogged drain line:
✔️ Water around the indoor unit
✔️ AC shutting off unexpectedly
✔️ Musty smells near vents
✔️ Water damage near the air handler
Here’s the good news: this is often preventable.
A maintenance visit can catch buildup early before it becomes a messy problem.
In our humid Hampton Roads climate, drain lines work hard all summer long.
A little maintenance now can prevent water damage later.
