We are excited for spring here at Native Plant Company! We kicked off our season with a wonderful event held by the York Audubon Society. We were honored to give a presentation on the relationships between native plants and birds.

How have you introduced native plants in your yard to support your local birds? What are your aspirations to do so?

Spring ephemerals are a category of plants that bloom in early spring. Early blooming provides sunlight before the forest canopy fills with leaves creating a dense shade on the forest floor below. Common spring ephemerals include trillium, Virginia bluebells, trout lily, mayapple, Virginia spring beauty, bloodroot, dutchman’s breeches, jack-in-the-pulpit and many more.

Spring ephemerals are beautiful and they feed our local wildlife. The mayapple produces a fruit similar to an apple. This fruit is a favorite food for eastern box turtle. Spring ephemerals also provide nectar for early emerging bees and butterflies.
