⚠️ Marshfield Fire Department – Generator Safety Reminder ⚠️

As our community continues to deal with widespread power outages, we want to share an important safety message.

While Eversource works to restore electricity to Marshfield, approximately 74% of the town remains without power. We know many residents are relying on portable generators — and we understand the need — but we’ve seen a concerning trend.

🚨 We have responded to an abundance of carbon monoxide (CO) detector activations over the past two days.
The majority of these calls have been caused by generators placed too close to homes, with exhaust directed toward the structure.

Carbon monoxide is:
• Colorless
• Odorless
• Invisible
• Potentially deadly

Even if a generator is outside, it can still allow CO to enter your home through:
• Doors and windows
• Dryer vents
• Garage spaces
• Soffits and attic vents

🔥 Generator Safety Tips:

✔️ Always place generators at least 20 feet away from your home
✔️ Make sure exhaust is pointed away from any structure
✔️ Never run a generator in a garage — even with the door open
✔️ Ensure working CO detectors are installed on every level of your home
✔️ Check batteries regularly

If your CO alarm activates:
• Get everyone outside to fresh air immediately
• Call 911
• Do not re-enter the home until it has been checked

We know this storm has been challenging, and we appreciate everyone’s patience while power crews continue their work. Your safety is our top priority.
