The everyday protest…

For six years now I’ve been writing a note on every order that I receive unless someone is covering while I’m away. It is getting to be time consuming as this business grows, but it helps slow me down so I remember why I do this work. But the main reason I keep writing these notes is because I have received so many comments and reviews about how much people appreciate this small gesture. People miss personal connection in their everyday interactions, so much so that they go out of their way to acknowledge them. So this has become my everyday protest to the ever increasing void between us all and the complete and utter lack of respect or appreciation that big businesses have for their customers. This is a symbolic hand reaching out to the person behind the order, to say thanks for tending the earth and our future with me.

The little things DO matter and make a positive impact in ways you may never know. If we all create lots of small everyday protests we can start to shift our current trajectory in big ways. If you are feeling overwhelmed and have no idea how to contribute, just start with something small and make it a daily practice. A wave starts as a ripple and picks up momentum as it goes.

Oh and also…long live cursive hand writing!!!!

Accidental pest deterrent finding….the squash in the first pic was planted amongst some volunteer chamomile plants, with the thought that I would harvest the chamomile and pull the plants once the squash needed more room. The squash planted 10 feet away with out chamomile has had its foliage chomped on relentlessly. It seems the chamomile is deterring the pests! And I have to say it looks quite attractive together too! I will definitely be putting this to the test next year with other garden buffet favorites as I live next to the woods and the big pressure is relentless!

Wild harvesting ramp seed is probably my favorite part of running this business. Most of the work is not very glamorous and requires way more computer time than you’d expect, so I cherish the moments when the work is what I dream of. Full days in the woods sustainably collecting the bounty of nature to share with likeminded folks who want to grow their own food and medicine.

It’s especially important to me to share ramp seeds because ramps are an “at risk” species due to over harvesting. And their seed has a much higher germination rate when planted (up to 90%) as opposed to naturally dispersed (10-20%). Thinning and replanting bulbs in dense clumps can also help ramps from overcrowding and can help a patch spread/establish more quickly. An example of when human tending can actually help a wild species.

Fall is a great time to plant ramp seed as that is when it drops naturally and experiences the cold of winter that is necessary for germination in the spring. If you are interested in starting your own ramp patch, head on over to Earthbeat seeds.com and use coupon code RAMPS15 for 15% off until 11/30. Happy seeding! 💗
