The term "nap" refers to the pile or orientation of fabric fibers. Traditionally, velvet and corduroy have a distinctive nap and texture. Part of the challenge of cutting upholstery fabric is to orient all of the fabric pieces so that the nap is running in the same direction to create a consistent sheen throughout.
