Letโs talk eggsโฆ ๐ณ
If youโve been following the news, Iโm sure youโve seen the FDA has recalled over 1M eggs because of a salmonella outbreak. If you buy eggs from the grocery store, I strongly urge you to research the misleading labels that are slapped on the carton.
๐ท๏ธ Cage free = hens can roam inside a room or building, but they do not have outdoor access.
๐ท๏ธ Free range = โfree choiceโ to be inside or outside during the day, a minimum of only 2 sq ft outdoor area per bird.
๐ท๏ธ Vegetarian diet = self explanatory.. but problematic as chickens are naturally omnivores.
During the day, our chickens have complete access to 13 acres to actually โfree rangeโ. They eat all kinds of bugs, mice, and even snakes which is a great source of protein for them - with the added benefit of pest control! They also receive our fruit and veggie scraps, garden rejects, on top of a locally made layer feed. They have a large coop that is cleaned regularly, and we are always fast to act if one appears ill.
Catching salmonella from our eggs has never crossed my mind - our birds and coop are clean, they are not crammed in a pen, and they live a happy and healthy life.
Many farmers in the area care for their livestock the same way we do. When you purchase locally, you are buying from someone who cares about the animal and its well being, unlike major corporations focusing solely on profit. And less likely to catch a bug ๐
