What happens if you cut down all of a city's trees? - Stefan Al

Explore what makes trees a vital part of cities, and how urban spaces throughout history have embraced the importance of trees.

By 2050, it’s estimated that over 65% of the world will be living in cities. We may think of nature as being unconnected to our urban spaces, but trees have always been an essential part of successful cities. Humanity has been uncovering these arboreal benefits since the creation of our first cities thousands of years ago. So what makes trees so important to a city’s survival? Stefan Al explains.

🇺🇸 Happy Memorial Day 🇺🇸

Today we honor and remember the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Their courage and service will never be forgotten.

As we spend time with family and friends this weekend, let’s take a moment to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because of those who served.

From all of us at Arborworks, thank you to our military heroes and their families. Wishing everyone a safe and meaningful Memorial Day.

Crape Myrtle Bark Scale (Acanthococcus lagerstroemiae) is an invasive scale insect affecting crape myrtles across the southern United States. First identified in Texas in 2004, it has continued spreading through many warm-climate regions.

These insects attach themselves to branches and bark, where they feed on sap and produce large amounts of honeydew. That sticky residue encourages the growth of black sooty mold, which can darken bark, reduce flowering, and stress the tree over time.

When seen, report them to EDDMapS at eddmaps.org or through the EDDMapS app.

🔍 Identification Tips:
• White or gray felt-like clusters along bark and branches
• Pink to gray “crawler” nymphs
• Blackened bark caused by sooty mold
• Heavy infestations may weaken flowering and overall tree health

Crape myrtle bark scale specifically targets crape myrtles and American beautyberry. Early identification can help slow its spread and protect our trees.

⚠️ Storm season is approaching — and hazardous trees don’t wait for convenient timing.
Every year, property owners are caught off guard by tree failures that could have been identified before severe weather arrived. Cracks, decay, deadwood, root instability, and poor structure are often invisible to the untrained eye until a storm turns them into major property damage.
A tree may look healthy and still be a serious liability.
Risk assessments that are designed to identify high-risk trees before they fail. Professional assessments can help reduce the risk of damage to homes, vehicles, driveways, power lines, and occupied areas.
Don’t trust storm season to guesswork or unqualified opinions.
Have your trees professionally assessed before high winds and saturated ground conditions expose hidden defects.

Mulch can be one of the best things you add to your landscape — if you use the right kind.

Natural mulches like arborist wood chips, shredded leaves, cardboard, and clean straw help retain moisture, improve soil health, and break down into nutrient-rich organic matter over time.

Keep mulch layers light (2–3 inches is plenty) and avoid piling it against tree trunks or plant stems. Too much mulch can trap moisture, smother roots, and create decay issues around the root flare.

Simple is best: natural mulch, light layers, and proper clearance around the base of the plant.

It often seems like their time here is infinite, but, like all living things, trees have a life cycle too. Trees can live long lives with proper care and maintenance. This graphic illustrates a tree's life from beginning to end.
