Spongy moth caterpillar season is here and your trees are at risk.

Spongy moth caterpillars (seen in the first image) hatch in late April and feed aggressively through June, targeting oaks, elms, willows, and dozens of other tree species. The second image shows their egg masses and the adult moths which appear late in the summer and fall.

The damage adds up fast:
🌿 A single season of feeding can completely strip a tree of its leaves
⚠️ Even partial defoliation severely stresses trees, leaving them vulnerable to secondary pests and disease
💀 Repeated defoliation can kill a tree, sometimes after just one bad year for low-vigor trees

The good news? The treatment window is open right now.

Is this pruning job a death sentence for this shrub?

Before you head outside with the chainsaw, consider talking to a certified arborist on the action plan. Here we show the result of an ambitious new homeowner with new power tools, which led to the "butchering" of a struggling Japanese Holly.

It takes a trained professional to know the correct location to cut branches, determine appropriate size and know how much density to leave. Good news for this guy - this is salvageable with some ArborKelp® and by hiring an expert to prune next year. This shrub will also need seasonal pruning every year or so after to ensure it stays healthy and well-shaped, especially because it is so close to the house.
