The forecast for this year is looking promising! The La Nina weather pattern that has plagued us with abnormally dry growing seasons for 3 - 4 years is expected to fizzle out soon. Rain should be normal this spring / early summer and possibly wetter than average by late summer into fall! Lord let it be so! This just may be a great year to replace dead / drought stricken turf.

La Niña is likely to collapse mid-winter, according to NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center, weakening the typical winter effects. A transition to El Niño could happen this summer.

Check out our putting Greens aerification process at the golf course (Randolph Oaks). I got off on the step count but you’ll get the point.

If you’re seeing brown areas in your yards have a look to ensure army worms aren’t the culprit. If they are, see the first comment for options you can purchase easily apply on your own.

There is a large outbreak of Army Worms currently in South Texas. The wet June / early July has provided a perfect environment for them. The eggs were laid on the leaves of trees and now the worms are hatching and falling to the ground beneath where they’ll begin feeding. They are easy to see as they’re occurring in large numbers. Good news is thay they are easy to eliminate. Any hose end insecticide or concentrate (to be mixed in a pump up sprayer) with the active ingredient Bifenthrin will wipe them out fast. Spray it and let it sit unwatered for a day or 2.

I’ve always thought this was plant was cool! Unless it’s growing where unwanted, of course. I’m not certain it’s exact name but it behaves just like Sensitive Plant.

If you’re tired of guessing whether or not you’re watering too much or not enough, you don’t have to. I use cheap ($10) moisture meters to monitor root zone moisture in my yard, garden, house plants etc. Simple science takes the guesswork out.

I post this image, not because the yard is particularly beautiful, but rather as a testament to the resiliency of hybrid Bermuda grass. This yard is not irrigated and has never had a supplemental water source other than rain since at least 2016! It will undoubtedly go brown and dormant this summer (it always does) but when favorable weather and rain return it will recover and look decent yet again. We have been treating it for a few years now so that it, at least, has available root zone nutrition, little to no w**d competition, zero grub issues etc. If hybrid Bermuda is fed and pests are managed it can tolerate a surprising amount of stress. It is the best full sun option for a lawn!
