After 24 years as a handyman and 12 years as a realtor, this may be the most impressive homeowner review of a solar system I’ve ever heard. This Tesla Solar Roof powers a large home, electric vehicles, and a hot tub—and they haven’t paid for electricity in over three years.

Would you install a solar roof on your home?

One of my favorite professional space-planning tricks is using painter’s tape to outline furniture, cabinets, appliances, and fixtures directly on the floor before installation or purchase.

This helps determine fit, spacing, and traffic flow before making expensive decisions.

A roll of painter’s tape and a tape measure can save a lot of headaches later.

Need to touch up a wall but don’t know the paint color?

Instead of guessing, remove a small paint sample, label it with the room name, sheen, and paint quantity needed, then take it to the paint store for scanning.

My favorite tip: Ask the paint department to place a small amount of the newly mixed paint directly on your sample and dry it before you leave. That lets you verify the match before you buy.

Also remember that sheen differences can make a touch-up stand out even when the color is perfect. Sometimes painting the entire wall produces the best result.

Sometimes the simplest repairs are the most satisfying.

Watch as asphalt driveway gaps are filled using a flexible crack filler. Relaxing sounds, smooth application, and an instant improvement.

A small crack today can become a much bigger problem after a few freeze-thaw cycles.

This driveway crack was caused by the roots of a nearby tree. Instead of using a rigid patch, I used a rubberized asphalt crack filler that stays flexible as the driveway and roots continue to move over time.

This simple repair helps reduce water pe*******on and can extend the life of your driveway.

A simple tip that can save you a lot of frustration: if you know you’ll need materials for an upcoming project, buy them before the rush.

Seasonal products and specialty materials can disappear quickly from store shelves. Whether you’re planning driveway repairs, winter prep, or a weekend DIY project, having the materials on hand means you won’t be delayed when it’s time to get the job done.

What products have you gone looking for only to find they were sold out?

Saw a professional gutter installation crew fabricating seamless gutters on-site and had to capture the process. 👀

I wasn’t affiliated with the crew or the project — I just thought viewers might enjoy the satisfying sounds and behind-the-scenes look at how seamless gutters are made right from the work van.

Two different cat door installs in one video! 🐈🚪

In this Mr. Fix It Tips episode, I show how to properly install:
• A cat door into a 6-panel hollow core interior door
• A second cat door through an insulated laundry room wall into the garage

One of the biggest tips in this project is properly positioning the template before cutting. On the hollow core door, I carefully align the opening so the cutout looks clean and doesn’t interfere with the molded door panels. The manufacturers made this much easier by including paper templates for accurate placement before cutting.

This wall unit also includes removable security panels to keep pets inside, prevent unwanted animals from entering, and add another layer of home security when the door is not in use.

I also demonstrate:
• Why concrete should never be mixed too soupy
• How hydration improves workability and bonding
• Removing trapped air bubbles
• Feathering edges to avoid chunky-looking repairs
• Using bonding adhesive correctly for better adhesion
