Stain Wood Like a Pro 🪵

Getting a professional-looking stain finish isn’t just about the stain—it’s about the preparation and application.

Before staining:

🔨 Sand the surface to your desired smoothness.
🧹 Use a tack cloth to remove residual sawdust.

Then:

🥫 Don’t shake the stain—stir it thoroughly to mix the settled pigments.
🖌️ Pour some into a larger basin so you can use a wide foam brush.
➡️ Apply the stain with long, slow, consistent strokes across the wood.
🧽 If the wood is getting darker than you want, wipe away excess stain with a clean cloth.
🔄 If it’s not dark enough, additional coats may be needed.

Finally, give the stain the manufacturer’s recommended drying and curing time before applying your finish.

For polyurethane, follow the product instructions for drying, curing, and sanding between coats when required.

STUCK BIT? TRY THIS! 🔧

Ever get a Phillips screw bit stuck inside your impact driver or drill bit holder?

Instead of fighting with it, try giving the side of the bit holder a quick tap with your pliers. No pliers nearby? I’ll sometimes give the bit holder a controlled tap against something solid, like the side of my ladder.

That little shock can be enough to free the bit so you can pull it right out.

It’s a simple trick, but after years of handyman work, I can tell you—it has saved me from a LOT of frustration! 😂🔨

Superglue Without Sticky Fingers! 🛠️

Here’s a simple little trick that can save you from getting superglue all over your fingers.

If you need to spread superglue with your finger, wrap that finger with a small piece of painter’s tape first. The tape creates a barrier between your skin and the glue, allowing you to spread it where you need it.

When you’re done, simply peel the tape off and throw it away.

Simple. Cheap. Effective. That’s what Mr Fix It Tips is all about!

Kitty decided I needed some supervision while installing this Delta faucet. 🐱🔧

So naturally, I asked her the important question:

“Kitty, do you like Delta faucets?”

Her response? 😻 MEOW!

Apparently, Delta has officially received the Kitty Seal of Approval. 🐾

When you install a new faucet, look inside the box before you throw everything away. Many manufacturers include a sticker with the faucet’s model number and sometimes the manufacturer information.

I take that sticker and put it inside the top of the vanity door.

Why?

Because someday that faucet may need a replacement cartridge, valve, handle, aerator, or another part. Having the model number right there makes finding the correct replacement part much easier.

And if you sell your home, you’re leaving the next homeowner with valuable information too.

It’s a tiny detail—but a really smart one.

Save this tip for your next faucet installation!

🚽 Don’t put up with a wobbly toilet seat!

A loose toilet seat is more than just a nuisance—it can potentially become a safety issue. In most cases, all you need is a screwdriver to tighten the plastic bolts securing the seat to the bowl.

A simple repair that can save you from replacing the entire seat!

In this video, I show you where to look for calcium or debris buildup and what you can do if cleaning it doesn’t restore the flow.

I also demonstrate an advanced modification that can dramatically increase water flow—but be aware that it can also increase water usage and may not be appropriate or permitted everywhere.

Save this one for the next time your shower isn’t delivering the flow you want!

Swap Your Showerhead Easily 🚿

Replacing a showerhead is one of those simple DIY projects you can tackle yourself!

In this video, I show you how to remove the old showerhead and install a new one with an adjustable wrench. I also use Teflon pipe dope on the threaded connection to help seal it and prevent leaks.

Don’t Replace That Showerhead Yet! 🚿

Got weak water flow from your showerhead? Mineral and calcium buildup could be the culprit.

Try soaking the showerhead in white vinegar for a few hours—for heavy buildup.

I use a gallon-size Ziploc bag, fill it about halfway with vinegar, secure it around the showerhead with a long twist tie, and let the vinegar do the work.

Remove the bag, run the water, and check the pressure and flow. You may be surprised by the difference!

Save this DIY tip for the next time your shower starts losing pressure!
