Should we take bets on how many times I will contract posion ivy this season? π
Seriously though, poison ivy is already all over McLean County. Our winter was not harsh enough to kill most of last year's vines and the rain so far this spring has it in perfect conditions to grow.
βΌοΈ Poison Ivy contains an oil called Urishiol, which is what causes the itching and burning rash most people know and hate. That oil can stick to just about everything- clothes, tools, shoes, steering wheel, pets fur, so it can spread VERY easily.
HOW TO ID POISON IVY:
- "Leaves of 3, Let it be"
- Grows in a set of 3 leaves with external leaves that exact mirror each other, middle leaflet often longer stem than external leaflets. Poison Ivy is smart and can change its leaf shape to match the plants its growing around (sometimes they look like Oak leaves, sometimes heart shaped, etc).
- Red center where leaves meet stem
- Usually grows as a vine/groundcover, can grow as a shrub
-Produces berries in Fall- do NOT ingest, toxic.
HOW TO REMOVE:
-Glove up, cover face, hands and arms fully. Use hand tools when possible. Disinfect EVERYTHING you touched and used after with diluted water with rubbing alcohol. Wash all clothes worn.
-DO NOT BURN. The oil becomes airborne and enters your lungs.
-Avoid mowing or w**d-wacking as oil becomes airborne and pieces containing oil fling around.
-BAG and dispose of properly. Again, NO burning.
If you think you've come in contact with poison ivy, wash the area with cool/cold soapy water 3 times. Don't use hot water as that opens up pores, increasing spreading.
If you're unsure if you have this growing in your yard, message me or send me a picture! Happy to help with ID and removal! π©πΌβπΎ
