My growroom became a new home to the sweetest Cardinal pair! ❀️πŸͺ΄πŸ¦

Mama bird decided my hanging spider plant in the growroom was the perfect place to nest build, and of course I'm elated over my new tenants! Around here, I do my best to provide a space (usually in my landscape, but growroom works too!!) for our local wildlife and pollinators, so this has definitely been special and validating.

Fun reminder that when we care for our Earth, sometimes our Earth wants to move right in! πŸ’™

If you need me, I'll be grandmother-ing my newly expected grandbabies and monitoring carefully as Mama bird gets ready to lay eggs! πŸͺΊ

Should we take bets on how many times I will contract posion ivy this season? πŸ˜…

Seriously though, poison ivy is already all over McLean County. Our winter was not harsh enough to kill most of last year's vines and the rain so far this spring has it in perfect conditions to grow.

‼️ Poison Ivy contains an oil called Urishiol, which is what causes the itching and burning rash most people know and hate. That oil can stick to just about everything- clothes, tools, shoes, steering wheel, pets fur, so it can spread VERY easily.

HOW TO ID POISON IVY:
- "Leaves of 3, Let it be"
- Grows in a set of 3 leaves with external leaves that exact mirror each other, middle leaflet often longer stem than external leaflets. Poison Ivy is smart and can change its leaf shape to match the plants its growing around (sometimes they look like Oak leaves, sometimes heart shaped, etc).

- Red center where leaves meet stem
- Usually grows as a vine/groundcover, can grow as a shrub
-Produces berries in Fall- do NOT ingest, toxic.

HOW TO REMOVE:
-Glove up, cover face, hands and arms fully. Use hand tools when possible. Disinfect EVERYTHING you touched and used after with diluted water with rubbing alcohol. Wash all clothes worn.

-DO NOT BURN. The oil becomes airborne and enters your lungs.

-Avoid mowing or w**d-wacking as oil becomes airborne and pieces containing oil fling around.
-BAG and dispose of properly. Again, NO burning.

If you think you've come in contact with poison ivy, wash the area with cool/cold soapy water 3 times. Don't use hot water as that opens up pores, increasing spreading.

If you're unsure if you have this growing in your yard, message me or send me a picture! Happy to help with ID and removal! πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸŒΎ

Enjoy these before and after's I did for a neighbor of mine here in Heyworth!

They have a fun shade bed that just needed some TLC. I handw**ded, pulled old mulch out to remove the older w**d fabric, added a new w**d prevention layer, and topped with new mulch! πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸŒΎ

New mulch just makes everything POP, doesn't it?
Love getting the opportunity to drive just down the road and help out the awesome neighbors in my town! πŸ₯°

Here's a fun before & after of a backyard corner bed I worked on last week that just needed a little touching up & redesign!

I extended the bed several feet, new edging, removed sod (by hand and shovel πŸ’ͺ) and laid new mulch. Hand w**ded, removed some noxious w**ds, and cut back/trimmed plants for the season. Really added some breathing room and my favorite- more room for more plants! 🌻

Love how this one turned out. And shout out Kings Lawn Care LLC for the extra hand on edging this new bed out. Super appreciate your help ☺️

Poisonous Hemlock. We are officially in season to start seeing noxious and harmful w**ds- Poison Ivy, Poison Hemlock, Poison Sumac, etc. So much poison! (lol)

But I pulled this from a client's yard this week, so I wanted to spotlight it for a moment. Poison Hemlock is starting to pop up all over Mclean County right now, especially along fence lines, roadsides, loose soil, ditches.

‼️The sap of this plant is highly toxic and can be deadly to people, children, and pets. DO NOT ingest, DO NOT rub near eyes or mouth, DO NOT burn. No need to panic if you rub against it, but you still want to avoid this one as much as possible!

How to ID Hemlock:
- Hemlock looks similar to Queen Anne's Lace (Wild Carrot), but has a deep purple/red base at the stem. Look for parsley-looking/fern-like leaves.
- Smooth stems, not fuzzy
- Purple/red base at stem, spotting down stem.

How To Remove:
- Glove up, long sleeves, and use hand tools. Absolutely NO burning. Dig up and remove the entire plant with root system to prevent further spreading. You want to remove this one before the blooms start to set!

If you're unsure if you have Poisonous Hemlock or other harmful w**ds in your yard, send me a picture or reach out to me! I am more than willing to help out with ID and removal! πŸ§πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ

This season has already started off with so much vigor (and so many days of sunshine 🌞)

I've spent the last couple months at properties doing seasonal clean up, cutback/pruning, and debris removal from the winter months. Sprinkle in some larger projects of soil grading entire lawns, grass/clover seeding, chopping fallen trees from our spring storms, & landscaping an entire property by mid-April, and I'd say we are already off to a busy and strong start this year! πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸŒΎ

That being said, I am finalizing my routine/weekly yardcare schedule this week! Return clients from last season- I'll bother you with details of your yardcare calendar later!

And of course, if you're looking for someone to care for and maintain your garden/yard spaces, I'm your girl and I'd love to help! πŸ™‹πŸΌβ€β™€οΈπŸŒ»

Moments like these make me extra thankful I work carefully by hand. Otherwise, I would've not only harmed these guys but probably pi**ed them off greatly ! 🐝

Red Paper Hornets- nesting in a bed of Karl Foerster grasses that I was cutting back for the season. These guys can be defensive of their nest, but incredibly beneficial for gardens as they seek out caterpillars and other garden pests. πŸ›

I was able to work around them, clearing out and cutting back plants while they kept a close eye on me.

Working with nature, not against her! πŸ’™πŸŒ

The w**ds didn't stand a chance yesterday! Enjoy these before and after's of my work in Miss Cathy's garden. πŸ’™ (really looking forward to start planting in here in her honor).

You already know- all by hand, no w**d wacking, no chemicals or spraying. Just on the ground, identifying, hand pulling, and breaking up soil the pioneer way! πŸ‘©πŸΌβ€πŸŒΎ
