What’s special about this load of mums from the back lot? It’s the last one! After weeks of hauling mums, the back lot is now empty. We’re heading into our last week of the season with a nice variety of late-season mums to choose from. Our last day for this season is Saturday, October 18.

Is your summer garden done? Here are four options for what's next:

1. Keep the garden going by planting lettuce, radishes, or other quick-maturing, cold-tolerant crops, especially if you use row covers to extend the season. We have seed packets available!

2. Plant now for next year. Fall is the best time to plant garlic. And for the first time, we have strawberry plants available in the fall. It's a great time to get a bed established!

3. Build up your soil for next year by planting a cover crop. We have a mix called Garden Enhancer that will grow this fall and then winter kill. Next spring, work your soil, and you're ready to plant. Early September is the ideal time to sow a cover crop.

4. Call it a year and deal with it in the spring. We get it - some years this is where we find ourselves.

The first pumpkins of the season are here, with more arriving soon.

What about mums? They've been here all summer since we grow them ourselves, but the heat has delayed their bloom. They're looking nice and full, but only a few varieties are showing their color. Each day of this cooler weather helps bring on the blooms. Each pot has a tag showing which color, so you don't have to wait if you're ready for mums now.

Strait Gate Greenhouses is a family oriented retail greenhouse operation located in the quiet countryside of northwest Ohio. We offer a premium selection of annuals, perennials, vegetable plants, trees, and shrubs as well as a large selection of mums and other fall items. We are a Proven Winners Certified garden center. Most of what we sell, we grow ourselves, starting our first seeds the end of January. If you’re in need of a break from the rat race of society, take an afternoon off and stop out for a visit. We try to keep life in the slow lane!
