The earth is only ours to borrow until our children take stewardship of its vast beauty, so treat it ever gently and love it deeply, like family. We are a small organic farm in the hills of San Diego County, California. Our mission is to live and garden with organic sustainable practices that incorporate and promote biodiversity, health, and wellness for our family and the many families we feed. I
n 1994, I became a master gardener after we moved to Washington state from California. I gardened and loved that green space for nearly five years, then we moved back home to So. Ca., where I embarked on a second journey attaining my master gardener certificate in Ca too. January 2002 we closed escrow on our new property, Heirloom Gardens! In 2004, we hit the ground running with our garden on the 'Garden Conservancy's National tour. We were featured in a few magazines, & news papers and also created an event with my sister at the San Diego Botanical Garden called 'Wild Bogs and Leaping Frogs'. This show combined my love and expertise in growing carnivorous plants and my sister, Julia CR Gray, an exceptional Fine artist and researcher of carnivorous plants and amphibians, to bring it all together. Lastly, the same year, we created another weekend event, hosted by Heirloom Gardens & Farm, called 'Art & Design in the Garden', where people arrived to enjoy a farmers market, classes on gardening by master gardeners, and walk the property and it's many gardens to view different venues and fine art displayed through out. In 2005, I, along with a team of master gardeners, created a display garden at the San Diego County Fair. I got to go to the fair many times that year! I continued to volunteer for a few more years with master gardeners. In 2006, we decided to homeschool our youngest daughter, which has taken the lions share of my time. This year, 2011/12 will be the last year we homeschool and then she's off to high-school! Over the last couple years I've preserved my love of gardening with creating the CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program where you can pickup a box of veggies each week. People love to see where their food comes from and appreciate the diversity, quality and freshness that cant be duplicated anywhere else, even at farmers markets! For me, gardening equals a labor of love and continual learning.
Fast forward to 2021-despite the pandemic of 2020, and moving back to HG&F from NC, after being away for several years, we’ve managed to clean up the property, gave the old homestead a facelift and build a new outdoor living space to enjoy year round! We’ve rejuvenated the orchard, have the addition of two beautiful greenhouses and planted a new small family variety orchard. Also, we have a few more building & planting projects planed for the next couple years.
