The Devil Wears Prada did not disappoint when it came to featuring design-famous furniture and decor. If you’ve seen the sequel, you may have spotted another round of gems like the Herman Miller Saiba chairs and this modern take on Royère’s iconic mid-century Parisian design.

Reposted • When The Devil Wears Prada 2 opened on 1 May, the fashion world dissected the clothes. Design obsessives went straight for the chairs. The pair opposite Miranda Priestly’s desk appear to be the Méandre side chair by Design Frères (), the furniture line founded in 2010 by French-born, Los Angeles-based designer Eric Thévenot. The Méandre traces its formal vocabulary to Jean Royère, whose metalwork bent and looped with a freedom unusual for mid-century French design, finding clients from Paris to Tehran to Cairo. Thévenot’s version keeps the line and moves the atelier to LA. Whether or not the production team confirmed the sourcing, it is exactly the kind of choice that rewards close looking.

Want to learn more about streamline moderne? Make your appointment to visit us! Touch history, design the future.

Reposted • The 1930s Machine Age introduced a radical shift in form: aerodynamics applied to static objects.

This solid teak sideboard is a direct translation of the Streamline Moderne movement. Notice the deliberate absence of sharp corners, replaced entirely by sweeping Style Paquebot curves and radiused D-end shelves. The upper structure is distinctly elevated by spherical spacers, giving a heavy, substantial piece of storage an unexpected lightness and continuous lateral flow.

Whether utilized as a primary bar unit or living space storage, it is ultimately a serious investment in 1930s geometry.

Come see the physical presence of these pieces on the floor before they enter a private collection.

🪵 Material: Solid aged teak with spherical spacers.
🕰️ Era: 1930s Streamline Moderne Art Deco.
📐 Form: Style Paquebot curves and radiused D-end shelves.
📍 Location: Journey East showroom, Tan Boon Liat Building.

Touch history, design the future! Plan your visit to find your inspiration, today!

Reposted • .interiors Not everything in design is meant to be subtle.

Some pieces are made to stand out, challenge proportions, or simply make you look twice.

Some work, some don’t, but all of them push the idea of what a chair can be.

Which one would you actually have at home?

The iconic AJ Table Lamp by Arne Jacobsen for Louis Poulsen remains one of the most influential examples of Scandinavian modern lighting design. Originally created in 1960 for Copenhagen’s SAS Royal Hotel, the lamp is celebrated for its clean architectural lines, asymmetrical shade, and highly functional directional light. Its balance of form and function continues to shape how interior designers approach task lighting, layered lighting plans, and timeless modern interiors.

For interior designers and design students, studying pieces like the AJ Lamp offers insight into how thoughtful furniture and lighting design can influence the mood, usability, and longevity of a space.

At the Bienenstock Furniture Library, design history becomes a hands-on learning experience, connecting today’s creatives to the legendary designers and iconic works that continue to inspire the future of interiors.

Visit the library to explore furniture design history up close, discover rare resources, and deepen your understanding of the pieces that shaped modern interior design.

This past month was busy, busy, and-you guessed it-busy. Moving into our new studio space, getting to meet and work alongside such talented designers, and visiting our favorite places in NC. it’s been full in the best way. So many exciting opportunities this season, and we are grateful for every moment of it. ✨

Here at the Bienenstock Furniture Library, the chair stands as the ultimate design test—where form, function, and craftsmanship meet in a single object that’s shaped centuries of furniture history.

Why do you think the chair became the benchmark for great design? And which iconic chair would you argue still defines it today?

Conversation pits may have defined the 1960-1970’s, but the idea behind them still shapes how we design today. Through the lens of the Bienenstock Furniture Library, they remind us that great interiors aren’t just about how a space looks—it’s about how it brings people together.

While you won’t often see a true sunken living room in new construction, designers continue to reinterpret the concept through layered seating, architectural zoning, and layouts that create a sense of intimacy within larger, open spaces. It’s a lasting lesson in designing for connection, comfort, and the way people actually live.

Could a modern version of a conversation pit work in a home you’re designing?
