This story is for Pam J. Carter, a dear friend:

This little fellow came to live with me last year, I named him Georgie Porgie. For those of you who don't know I have chickens, I have always had chickens. The next question people usually ask is how many do you have. I have around 35, they are hard to count!
But, back to Georgie, he is a Silkie Bantam, he lives with my standard chickens, which are regular size chickens. I have all different breeds and they lay brown eggs.
Now, Georgie, came to live with me because someone dropped him off in my front yard. My understanding is that they thought this would be the perfect home for him. Georgie, is unfortunately a rooster who makes noise about 4:00 am., so most people would be unable to have him. The good thing for Georgie, is I like him, he is a fine fellow. He had a run in with a fox last summer, but I ran out and saved him so we have become good friends.
The problem with all this is, again he is a rooster he lays no eggs, makes noise, eats and the other chickens don't like him. I like him though, so we deal with all the consequences of having an uninvited guest living in our chicken coop. Kind of like a refuge, I guess.
Free range chickens, live in groups, there is a rooster, and he has hens, which he will fight for, help feed, and pretty much have their way with the their hens as much as they want. Roosters do not like other roosters. I have around 8, roosters, with each having a group of hens, or trying to take someone elses hens, lets just say its busy.
A few weeks ago I ran into a dear friend, who was asking about my chickens as all good friends do and she related a story to me about someone she knew who had dropped off a rooster at the perfect place , and now you know the rest of the story!
