Clethra Anifolia or Summersweet is a large, prolific native bush perfect for lake & riverside living. It thrives & flowers in part shade, loves wet feet & hosts 10 species of butterflies & moths. Ideal to clean the water, hold the bank together & has scented blooms for two months in summer. Hummingbirds love it & deer do not! It’s a hard one to find in its original native variety. Neglect & gardening…two words rarely heard together! Wouldn’t you like to just sit on your garden bench occasionally & just hang? No digging, deadheading, watering, mulching…just watching the pollinators enjoy. Kinda the point right? Well, these plants thrive on neglect. Once established, they take no care, flower faithfully & are all pollinator magnets. Most attract Hummingbirds too. Some even flower ALL summer. Ahh. All available now. Have you ever seen one? It’s very small. It’s a White Spotted Sable Moth. First one we’ve ever seen. Flies during the day. Host plant is Goldenrod. Go Native plants!

Ok, so I listened to the rain all nite. We really needed it & now my rain barrels are full. But when I looked at the radar early this morning…and saw snow & wintry mix. Wow! It’s not April it’s almost June. Who agrees? It’s time for this pattern to move on…we’re open but wear your long johns & raincoats.
