It's that time of year when many pastures in Missouri become dominated by annual grass weeds like crabgrass and yellow foxtail. Another much less common foxtail species, called knotroot foxtail, has been found in the past few seasons.

Knotroot foxtail has a short hair-like ligule and a typical foxtail seedhead but distinguishes itself from yellow foxtail with its short, knotty rhizomes and is a perennial.

🌱Seed Sunday🌱

It’s officially seed saving season!

But Beware! Not all seeds are created the same.

If you planted seeds from a packet labeled “F1” or “hybrid”, the seeds collected from those plants will not produce a plant the same as the parent plant.

“Heirloom” seeds will produce the same plant as long as they were properly pollinated and isolated from other pollinators.

Pictured is a marigold plant, after the flower was pollinated, and seed collection.

Welcome to August! Keep your flowers, veggie garden and fruit trees going strong this month with these tips:

• Don't fertilize roses after Aug. 15
• Divide iris after bloom
• Plant fall veggies (lettuce, radishes, cabbage, broccoli) until late Aug.
• Prop up branches of fruit trees threatening to break under the weight of a heavy crop
• Continue to spray ripening peaches to prevent brown rot
