They come into your life with an energy and excitement as if to say I am so happy you chose me. The thing is in most cases I believe they chose us. They find us, care for us, love us unconditionally and vow to be there - just to be there with us. Thats all they want. To be loved. To love us and to bring into our lives joy, laughter and unconditional love. They listen patiently as you talk about your day, they lay beside you as you work, they wait till its their turn to play. They always want to go with you, where ever you are going. They just want to be with you. They are your best friend no matter what.
Our hearts are broken right now as we grieve about our Herby's passing. My house is quiet. I turn expecting to see him by my side and he is not there. There is a huge hole and our entire family feels it.
What I do believe is that herby will be close to me forever now. Maybe I wont be able to see him but I know I will feel him with me. I will glance across the yard and get a glimpse of him. I will turn the corner in the kitchen expecting to see him and smile remembering all the moments. I will listen closely for signs.
You filled all our hearts with such love and gave us so many memories. Those memories will fill the hole we feel but right now, at this moment my heart aches and the tears fall and I just wish we had had more time. Love you so much little man. love you so much.

This weekend for me will be a remembrance of life.

Today we will celebrate my moms 96th birthday. Our family will gather together to hug, laugh and spend the afternoon with Glor and appreciate how blessed we are that she is here with us at the age of 96. She is forever hopeful, forever happy and smiling that "Glor" smile.

The weekend began for all of us however with a different kind of Celebration of Life. We lost our dearest friend last week and now as we all headed to Virginia we tried to understand and process all that had happened.

As we listened to all the stories, all the memories, looked at all the pictures and saw all the people that made the trip from all over the country to be there for Alex and his family I noticed something very special. We were smiling and laughing together. We were remembering how much this one very special man impacted all our lives.

I have about a million different versions of him sitting across the table from rich and I with that smile you see in the picture below.

We were extra blessed you see. We lived right next door to Carolyn and Alex for many years. Our lives intertwined in the ordinary events of the day. Mowing the lawn, popping over for a beer. Hanging by the pool. Home depot trips because Rich and Alex needed to tinker on something. Our childern playing together in the yard. It was all the normal moments our lives shared that I hold dearest in my heart. I never made sausage and peppers without putting aside a dish for Alex and sending it next door. Not sure how that even started but it was a thing for me to always remember to do. I picture him coming up the side yard because it was a Saturday and Rich and Alex had pool stuff to discuss. Basically just a side reason to hang out, share a beer and enjoy the afternoon together. Alex was always there for everyone. Always included you and in a lifetime cut way to short had more experiences, more moments of joy and laughter and enriched more lives with those he knew that most do in a lifetime.

We came together this weekend to remember and support each other because we feel the loss so deeply. In my heart though I know that Alex lived every day so full of life and now he is just on a different kind of journey. The priest said that he believes Alex will be given the job post as the greeter to all who come after him. What a perfect retirement job for him now. The greeter at the gate. Smiling that smile and welcoming you in to the next party. I love you so my friend.
