I get a lot of questions on slab foundations vs post & pier foundation. Personally I prefer post & pier, but wrote out a list of pros and cons for the matter:

Slab Construction
1) Is easier on the builder
2) Is an easier foundation to design
3) Requires much more detailed land preparation - a level building site
4) Lot drainage planning needs to be carefully considered
5) There tends to be more bugs, esp. centipedes in the house
6) More cost put into concrete

Post & Pier
1) More cost put into labor
2) Current building codes are requiring more extensive foundations than a few years ago
3) Allows for ventilation under the 1st floor - thus can be cooler
4) Makes additions and/or changes much easier, esp. for electricians and plumbers

Neil's tip of the day (yesterday): Finished floors less than 6 feet high can have windows that go all the way down to floor level, without any kind of guardrail needed!

Neil's tip of the day: Doors can now count towards ventilation, even a solid door... no screen needed.
