Jenkins Landscape marks 60 Years as an employer and community-builder on the Treasure Coast

Harold and Susan Jenkins have a gift for helping things grow---plants, trees, their family, their business, their community, and their legacy for the future.

Jenkins Landscape Company has deep roots in the Hobe Sound community. Harold’s grandfather, Carl was a squash farmer in Indiana in the summer and in Jupiter Farms in the winter. His son, Harold ‘Gene’ Jenkins, inherited his same work ethics for getting dirt under his fingernails, working hard, and respecting nature. Gene partnered with Roy Rood for many years before launching his own landscape company with a focus on residential landscape installation described as “everything outside the front door.”

When Gene passed away in 1986, it was only logical that his son Harold and wife Susan Jenkins took over the business in 1988. “We had a lot of learning to do in very short order,” Harold says. “At times, Susan and I wondered what we had taken on, but we were determined to make a success of the business -- together.” Susan agrees. Originally a New Jersey girl, Susan realized that running a Florida landscaping business wouldn’t come naturally for her. “But we dove in head first,” she says, “determined to prove to ourselves and anyone who doubted us that we could do it.” And in fact, they did it! Harold became an expert in the landscape contracting industry, with a focus on design, installation and maintenance. If it grows outdoors in South Florida, Harold knows its life cycle, its preference for sun or shade, its water requirements, and the kind of nutrients that encourage its growth.

Harold is well known throughout the local community and statewide as an industry leader who is a straight shooter, gives clear answers - or searches until he’s found the solution to a question. He became heavily involved with the Florida Nurserymen’s Growers and Landscape Association (FNGLA) and well-schooled in the art of landscaping for high end residential properties. Susan meanwhile learned every aspect of running the office with the guidance of Harold’s mom, Dorothy Jenkins. “I like to be behind the scenes,” Susan says, “making sure the right things are happening. We make a good team working together.”

Harold and Susan will always tell you the success of the business really comes from their customers and their employees. There are still a handful of customers that first hired Jenkins Landscape when Gene was running the show. About 30% of the employees have worked at Jenkins for more than 15 years. There are even a few that started before Harold and Susan became owners in 1986.

The involvement of the whole Jenkins family in the landscaping business is the stuff of legend in Hobe Sound. If there is something good to be done for the environment, from sponsoring Hobe Sound Chamber of Commerce or Keep Martin Beautiful events to being hands-on in their donation of time, energy, labor and equipment working alongside other volunteers on projects such as the restoration of the Gomez Cemetery, you can count on them to be involved, often quietly without fanfare. Two of Harold and Susan’s children Steven and Erin, now the third generation of the Jenkins family in the landscaping business, began working in the family business from the ground up and are now leading the company into the future. Steven started the irrigation department and has expanded his knowledge to the landscape installation side. Erin is managing the maintenance and administration division of the company.

“My kids are doing an outstanding job running the company. They are building the business to be sustainable. That’s a value that has helped the company prosper over the years, and it’s a value that benefits our entire community,” Harold says.

So what does Harold do, as he looks back at 60 years of growth of Jenkins Landscape? Retire? No, he runs for and wins a seat on the Martin County Board of County Commissioners. He has rapidly gained the reputation as a Commissioner who listens. He knows the county--its people, its history, and its sense of community--- and he cares deeply about the legacy that he, his family, and all of the residents of the region will leave to their children and grandchildren. And Susan? “I’ll retire someday,” she says, “but there’s no date written on any wall. I still love watching a barren patch become a beautiful piece of land with all its greenery.”
