For over 40 years, our focus has been simple—helping trees last.

While techniques have evolved, the goal hasn’t changed: preserve and support long-term tree health.

That mindset still guides everything we do.

This is what May looks like.

Color, texture, and layers that have been building over time.

Moments like this don’t last long—but they’re the result of consistent care and attention.

Healthy trees don’t just end up here. They’re supported year after year.

Right about now, everything feels like it’s happening at once.

Blossoms, new leaves, fresh growth—it all comes on fast in May.

It’s also when differences between trees start to show. Some fill in quickly. Others take their time. Some need a little help along the way.

This is one of the most important windows for setting trees up for the rest of the season.

How long do your trees usually stay in bloom?

Winter doesn’t just impact branches—it impacts the soil too.

Freeze-thaw cycles, snowpack, and foot or equipment traffic can all lead to compaction and reduced oxygen in the root zone.

As trees come out of dormancy, they rely on healthy soil conditions to recover and push new growth.

A spring soil check-up helps identify compaction related stressors and allows us to put together a plan to supports a strong start to the season.

Winter storms don’t always leave obvious damage. A branch may appear normal, but hidden cracks, splits, and internal stress can quietly weaken a tree’s structure.

Heavy snow and wind can create fissures that aren’t easy to spot from the ground—but over time, they can lead to limb failure just when trees are leafing out and catching more wind.

Early spring is the right time for a post-storm check-up. A careful inspection helps identify structural concerns, reduce risk, and support long-term tree health before the growing season is in full swing.

If something doesn’t look quite right, it’s worth a closer look.

Brown or blotchy leaves on fruit trees and crabapples are often an early sign of fungal disease — not just seasonal stress. Diseases like apple scab and rust infect trees early in the growing season, before most homeowners notice visible damage.

Our fungicide program starts in April, timed to protect new growth as it emerges. Early applications are key to reducing infection, preserving foliage, and protecting fruit quality throughout the season.

Spring schedules fill quickly, especially for multi-visit programs. Getting on the list now helps ensure proper timing when conditions are right.

If your crabapple, apple, cherry, or other ornamental trees struggled with browning leaves last year, this is the time to act.

It’s maple sugaring season 🍁

As days warm up and nights stay cold, sugar maples begin moving sap from their roots up into the canopy — the same natural process that supports spring leaf-out. That sap flow is what makes maple syrup season possible, whether it’s happening in a backyard or a sugarhouse down the road.

Healthy maples produce better sap flow, and good long-term tree care plays a role in keeping these iconic trees thriving year after year. Proper pruning, soil health, and protection from stress all support strong seasonal cycles — including sugaring season.

If you’re spotting taps around town or enjoying fresh syrup this time of year, it’s a great reminder of how remarkable (and useful) our trees really are.

Happy sugaring season from all of us at Tree Specialists.

Seeing brown or burned shrubs right now? You’re not alone.

We’re starting to see a lot of winter damage across properties in our area. Two of the most common issues this time of year are plow damage to shrubs from snow removal and winter injury (desiccation) on evergreens.

With the warmer temps and bright sun we have experienced recently, browning and winter burn will start showing up much more quickly. Many plants that look like they are dead can be saved! If your shrubs or evergreens look stressed, now is a good time for a professional evaluation.

Winter may look quiet, but some tree pests are already preparing for spring.
Those tan, sponge-like patches on the trunk are spongy moth egg masses—and each one can contain hundreds of eggs.

Winter is one of the best times to spot them. With leaves off the trees, egg masses are easier to see and assess before caterpillars emerge and begin defoliating in late spring. Early identification helps reduce stress on already vulnerable trees and supports long-term canopy health.

If you’re noticing egg masses on valued landscape trees, a certified arborist can help evaluate pressure and plan responsible, science-based management before bud break.
