The desk belonged to a pair of retired teachers who kept it in their front room for their granddaughter. They set it near the window so she could work in the same quiet they once offered their students. She practiced her letters there. She read her first chapter book there. They kept a small lamp on the corner so she could finish her homework after dinner. The desk stayed in their home long after she outgrew it. They held on to it because it reminded them of the years they spent helping children learn. It holds that steadiness. It keeps the warmth of a home that valued simple routines and patient teaching.
