8 ways to make more of the awe in your life:
1. Moral beauty
2. Collective effervescence
3. Wild awe
4. Music
5. Visual design
6. Spiritual and religious
7. Stories of life and death
8. Epiphanies
Dacher Keltner believes there are eight main sources of awe. Here are his tips for maximising their potential.
1. Moral beauty
Think of a mentor whose courage or kindness inspired and stayed with you. Reflect, practise and pursue kindness.
2. Collective effervescence
Join a dance class, go to a sports event – do something in movement with others.
3. Wild awe
Tap into your childhood sense of wonder at nature. Take an “awe walk” outside.
4. Music
Listen to or make music with others, something that connects you to your home or identity or gives you chills.
5. Visual design
Notice systems of visual patterning that tell you you’re relating to something vast. The design of a city, for example.
6. Spiritual and religious
Sixty per cent of Americans find awe in church, biblical texts and sacred music – but you may do so meditating or at yoga.
7. Stories of life and death
Consider the effect of a child’s birth or a parent’s death. Some cultures tell stories around a dead body, but wearing your dad’s favourite tie is storytelling too.
8. Epiphanies
The big ideas that unite facts of your life. You might ponder the infinity of space or realise how much you are like your parents.
