To wrap up Hawaiian Language month, we wanted to highlight Hale ‘Ōlelo (Ka Haka ʻUla O Keʻelikōlani), The College of Hawaiian Language at UH Hilo. The complex features a performing arts auditorium, classrooms, library, media resource room, computer lab, meeting rooms and offices. The facility was named in honor of Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani Keanolani, who was a high chiefess known as an advocate of the Hawaiian language, culture and tradition.
When lava from Mauna Loa threatened to destroy Hilo in 1881, Princess Ruth Keʻelikōlani traveled to the advancing flow, offered chants and sacred gifts such as brandy and red silk scarves to Pele, and slept at the foot of the lava flow through the night. By morning, the lava stopped just short of town, and many believed her actions had saved Hilo from destruction.
