Celebrating World Architecture day with a history lesson about the Kahuku Marconi Building.

Hawaii helped pioneer wireless communication more than a century ago. The earliest wireless link between North America and Asia was established by the Marconi Company in 1914 --- right here on Oahu!
Hawaii's telegraphy installation at Kahuku was the largest in the world when constructed. During the late 1800s to early 1900s, a worldwide effort was underway to improve communication and quickly transmit messages across oceans, by using morse code.

In June 1900, a wireless transmission was sent across four miles, between Iolani Palace and the Kaimuki Station. The message โ€œHello! Is anybody out there?โ€ was one of the first wireless transmission west of the Rocky Mountains.

In 1916, regular telegraph communication between Hawaii and Funabashi, Japan was established at across 4,200 miles. It was the longest distance ever undertaken by a commercial telegraph company. The following year, America entered WWI and the US Navy took over all wireless communication. The station was returned to private owners after the war.

Guglielmo Marconi championed wireless communication across oceans. His efforts to spread thoughts and information across vast distances were incredible! Chicago, which hosted the 1933 World's Fair declared October 2nd as Marconi Day.

FAI helped nominate the Marconi Wireless Telegraph Station to the National Register of Historic Places in 2010. We invite you to keep learning about Hawaiiโ€™s history!
