Good dairy animals can be milked anywhere.
This is our first time milking, we started with a milking stand to learn how to milk. Once we, the Nigerian dwarf goat and I got to know each other she allowed me to start milking her anywhere. If you’re looking for a homestead animal to provide your milk make sure you have a good relationship with the animal you are going to work with.

Pawpaws! It’s that time of year again! Last week we were in Maryland harvesting wild pawpaws. I was told that the wild ones don’t taste nearly as good as select varieties so I went searching. I went to Lockwood today not realizing it was a holiday but they had a class so the gate was open and I had a couple of hours to explore. I was after chestnuts butternuts and American persimmons but ended up also finding pawpaws and a pecan tree! Wow talk about some amazing flavor, I can’t wait to get fresh pawpaws pecans and persimmons from our farm!

Some very large chestnuts coming off our property. These are believed to be a Japanese or a Japanese hybrid. We have 8 chestnut trees here that are producing. This one is the youngest and has the largest nuts but not the best tasting.

The first batch of piglets are off mom and working on getting fence trained. Right after sows are done with piglets they go into heat so it’s time to bring her back to the boars. American Guinea hogs are a very good breed for the homestead, these piglets require very little. They have been without shelter for the last month and I do not plan to give them any until winter comes around again.

We have a new addition to the farm, a mix breed of sheep. It’s a little experiment for us. we will see if they can learn to respect an electric fence and what they chose to eat. Our hope is that we can use them to eat the stuff that pigs won’t eat. We will be eating them at the end of the year. They came from a friend of ours that needs a break from farming. Maybe more to come next year?

We’re keeping the hut in the same place but moving the fence around it a little so the pigs can access fresh grass, they are enjoying it. American Guinea hogs are low input pork, you don’t need to feed them much because they grow slowly for a quality pork that is super flavorful.

We found us a few boars to add to our herd. They are young, I was told 8 months old which makes them ready to start breeding. We are training them to the electric fence in order to be able to move them around without escaping. They will get about 2 weeks penned up without the distractions of our 4 gilts and sow.

The stone cairn at the farm is one impressive piece of work. This is larger then most pickup trucks. The previous owners and friends put a large black tarp over it and dug down about 4 feet in the middle to take a rock out. That rock was sent to get dated, they wanted to know when the cairn was built. The rock that they had tested last saw the sun in about 1550. Hopkinton was settled in 1757, so who built the cairn?
