Here are my tips:
1. Save your photos in photo boxes. Photo boxes are slimmer than photo albums so they take up less storage space.
2. Organize your photos chronologically. It's easier to locate photos that way. If you organize by person, for example, it gets tricky when you have multiple people in the photo.
Organizing by THEME (Christmas, vacation, etc) is recommended ONLY IF you don't have a lot of photos in that category. When you have hundreds and hundreds of vacation pictures, for example, they can easily get lost in that amount.
3. Don't save EVERY photo you own. Give yourself the permission to toss blurry photos, photos of people you don't know, photos that aren't meaningful, and duplicates. Feel free to share the duplicates with the people in the photos!
BONUS: If you're afraid you won't enjoy your photos as much because you can't hold them (like a photo album) create a photo book. Photo books help your pictures shine through good design. Plus, your favorite photos can be showcased better since you're putting less photos in the book.
