White oak or red oak: why your property needs both.
🌳 White oaks: most have rounded leaf lobes with no bristle tips. Their acorns mature in one season and are low in tannins, so they taste sweeter. Deer go for them first, and they're usually gone early in the season.
🌳 Red oaks: most have pointed leaf lobes tipped with tiny bristles. Their acorns take two seasons to mature and are higher in tannins, so they're more bitter. Deer leave them for later, and they hold up on the ground into late fall and winter.
The biggest reason to plant both is frost insurance. White oak acorns form in a single season, so a late spring frost after the flowers are fertilized can leave you with a very small crop that year. Red oak acorns take two seasons, so the ones already on the tree from last year still come through. Having both also stretches your season: the white oaks feed deer early, and the red oaks keep feeding them after the white oak acorns are gone.
