🥧 For the Pie Crust
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
2 sticks cold unsalted butter, cubed
8–10 tbsp ice water

🍓 For the Filling
¾ cup strawberry jam

🥚 For the Egg Wash
1 egg mixed with 1 tbsp water

🥛 For the Glaze
½ cup powdered sugar
1 tbsp milk
½ tsp vanilla extract

Everyone rewatches Practical Magic in October for the plot. We rewatch it for the house. The Owens kitchen, the conservatory, the bedrooms full of mismatched furniture.

It wasn’t decorated all at once. It came together over time, which is why nothing in it matches. The lamps are from different decades, there are too many blankets on every chair, and the shelves are full of things that clearly meant something to the person that put it there.

That’s what makes it feel like a home.

If she said don’t bring anything, bring something anyway.

An apple crisp baked in a ceramic pie dish you leave behind. Deviled eggs on a stoneware egg platter so they aren’t sliding around on a dinner plate. Bread still warm in a cloth bread bag, which keeps the crust crisp instead of sweating the way it does in plastic.

The food is gone by the end of the night. The dish stays in her kitchen, and she’ll think of you every time she pulls it out.

How to bring any room to life with lamps.

Interior stylist Pippa Blenkinsop calls lighting the key to any scheme, and the way to get it right is layering. Table lamps, floor lamps, wall lamps and ceiling lights on dimmers, working together instead of one bright fixture doing all the work overhead.

There are two kinds you need. Task lighting, which is bright and shadow free for cooking or reading. And ambient lighting, which is the warm pools of light you want when you’re winding down or having people over. Lamps are how you get the second one.

Lamps made by independent makers here in the US are harder to find than they should be. Almost all lighting is mass produced overseas, so this part of our shop has been slow to build, and we’re excited about where it’s finally going. Supporting small businesses one product at a time.

What are you really buying when you shop on Etsy?

It’s sad to see, but (in my opinion), the platform has completely lost the trust of both its customers and vendors. What was once a marketplace for handmade goods and independent creators is now filled drop shippers, resellers and AI-generated artwork.

I saw this coming over three years ago, so I started my own small business marketplace Aware House 😌
