God lead us to this house where a 73 year old woman lives. She survives on Social Security and lives in the country far enough away from Houston that its hard to get help. Hurricane Harvey packed her house with a punch.The onslought of rain water was too much for it. Water poured into her house soaking her bed, all her bedroom furniture, her carpet, and causing the loss of her refrigerator, stove and her A/C. due to a hole in her roof which grew because if the amount of rain incurred by the Hurricane. This lady ripped out her own carpet and threw out her furniture by herself.
Due to a pre-existing hole in her roof, FEMA would not help her with funds.Two weeks ago, we took it upon ourselves to help her out by adding 6 mil plastic to her roof until we could get back to do something with it and since rain was expected that weekend.
Two days ago, we tried to replace the shingles but were having very slow progress due to the extreme heat (90 degrrees with high humidity). Only got to remove the shingles, and had to come back another day to attach the felt, drip edges, roof jack and pipe covers.
The owner is delighted with her roof getting fixed. She has been out helping to pick up shingles off the ground even in this extreme heat.
We still have to return to apply shingles, build her new entry steps (I put my foot into one of them entering the house), both front and back, need install a bathroom light, fix ceiling damaged sheetrock, paint rooms, install vinyl flooring and find her new stove, fridge and get a/c fixed.
All the work done, so far, has been contributed by generous donors while Tim, his daughter, her boyfriend and I have contributed the trailer, gas, and free labor to the cause of helping a deserving woman out. She tries to feed us to help us, too.
