progress update on a front yard in san antonio’s king william neighborhood. this family wanted to stop fighting their lawn every summer and make their front yard actually useful, a place to sit, talk with neighbors, and enjoy nature.

drawing on a sense of place in king william and inspiration from olmos park, we designed a seating circle of three limestone blocks that fit the hill country landscape while giving the space a function. the planting draws from central texas xeric gardens: drought-tolerant natives and climate-adapted plants chosen for structure, year-round interest, and pollinators.

The best way to beat the heat might be in your own backyard.

If you live somewhere like Houston, you know how much it matters to have water close by. A place to dip your toes, sink in up to your shoulders, or just cool off for a second before heading back inside. Yet most yards are a stretch of hot grass nobody wants to walk across in August.

Now imagine that space as a room made for cooling off. A pool, a hot tub, or a simple stock tank, surrounded by non-slip decking that stays cool underfoot. Plants, fences, or breeze blocks form the walls, giving you privacy right where you want it most.

A water room doesn’t have to be big or fancy. A cowboy pool in a sunny corner can be just as inviting as an in-ground pool. Plan a little before you build, though. Skip trees that drop leaves and fruit into the water, and set aside a tucked-away spot for the pump, filter, and chemicals.

Whatever form it takes, it’s one of the best ways to get you outside and actually enjoying your yard.

Think beyond the lawn 🌿

The best seat in the house might be outside.

Think about how much of a yard is just a giant green rectangle that hardly gets used.
Now imagine turning that space into a room you actually live in. A table under a pergola, close enough to the kitchen that dinner outside feels easy. Hedges and planters for walls, string lights for the evenings.

For most of history, the land around a home was meant to be lived in. Families cooked, ate, and gathered outside, and the yard was part of the house. The tidy patch of grass we only look at is a pretty recent idea.

An outdoor dining room doesn’t have to be big or perfect. A level patio, a table sized for the people you love, and a little shade can turn an unused corner into a place you visit every day. And when it sits right next to the kitchen garden, you can snip herbs straight onto your plate, one of my favorite parts.

odd numbers are purely a design-oriented suggestion - but it helps plantings look more natural

One of my fave collabs H-E-B and the Native Plant Society of Texas - Houston ! They have such a wide selection available and there is no better time to get things in the ground than fall when it comes to natives.

When I see a plain old lawn, my mind starts going a mile a minute. What did this look like 50 years ago? 500 years ago? And even if we can’t get back to a pure ecosystem, what could be a better use of this land?

We give every room in our homes a purpose. Our outdoor spaces deserve the same thought. Do you want a play area for the kids? A place to gather with family and neighbors? A spot that invites pollinators?

When we design around how we actually live, the yard becomes a space we use instead of just mow and water. And once we’re out there using it, we can start building ecosystems around us.

I were planting the Owens sisters’ garden in real life 🌙🌿

A practical magic garden starts with herbs, then layers in natives that actually thrive here: elderberry, American beautyberry, echinacea, gaura, and muscadine grapes. Round it out with lavender, wormwood, and all the other practical herbs that a green witch might use.

lawns started as a status symbol. in 1700s europe, keeping a huge stretch of clipped grass with no crops or livestock meant you had land to waste and people to pay to maintain it. then olmsted’s suburbs, the push mower, and post-war chemical companies made it the default for everyone. in this series, i’m giving you alternatives to a lawn, and every one has a function.

in this series, we’ve focused on water features not only because they are beautiful additions to our gardens, but because they are an incredibly powerful asset when talking about sustainability.

here, we’re learning about Tintinhull Garden in Somerset, England. the garden’s structure was laid out by Phyllis Reiss, but it was Penelope Hobhouse who lived and gardened at Tintinhull in the 1980s, who’s known for the planting choices that make this pond so successful.

a quiet, contemplative space, framed by the structure of the home. the water and planting around it brings the whole design together.

it’s a reminder that a water feature doesn’t need to be complicated to earn its place. a simple, calm pond can anchor a garden, offer a moment of calm in the heat of a Texas summer, and give wildlife a place to thrive

we’ve been talking about water features in Texas gardens. one of my favorite water features to design are ponds. they are such beautiful, holistic additions to any garden. they support pollinators, local wildlife and help manage the Texas heat. they may seem difficult to maintain, but aquatic plants already do a lot of the work for us. here’s a list of my favorite aquatic plants for Texas ponds
