This is the kind of advice that costs homeowners thousands — not because it’s malicious, but because it’s incomplete.

Epoxy doesn’t fail randomly.
It fails when prep gets oversimplified.

Concrete needs a mechanical bond.
Not a rinse. Not a hope. Not a “looks fine to me.”

Power washing forces moisture into the slab.
Acid etching changes the chemistry of a surface that’s about to receive another chemical.
Neither replaces proper profiling.

This is what epoxy reveals that other floors hide. 👇

The moment we stripped this slab and made our first grinding pass, the truth showed up…
high spots, low spots, waves everywhere.

And here’s the part that surprises homeowners the most:
this wasn’t an old floor.
This was a new, nice home.

Epoxy doesn’t float and it doesn’t hide bad concrete.
It follows the slab exactly as it’s poured…
which means rushed, uneven concrete turns into uneven epoxy and weak bond points.

This is why epoxy floors cost what they do.

She saved money.
It looked great.
And this is exactly where it went wrong 👇

Cleaning concrete isn’t the same as profiling concrete.
Epoxy needs a mechanical bond… which means opening the concrete pores with diamond grinding, not just washing it.

You can see it right here under the hot tire pickup:
Smooth concrete. No profile.
CSP 1 when it should’ve been at least a 3.

That’s why we grind.
Not so we can charge more…
but because epoxy only bonds as well as the surface underneath it.

DIY can work… but skipping prep always shows up later.

Epoxy is a plastic.
A coating that sits on top of the concrete.

Concrete overlays?
They’re still concrete… bonded, integrated, and moving with the slab underneath.

It helps as an installer to be versatile because that difference matters.
It affects breathability, movement, wear patterns, and how the floor ages over time.

Neither system is “better” in every situation — but pretending they’re the same material is how people end up disappointed.
