𝐒𝐓𝐎𝐏 𝐊𝐈𝐋𝐋𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐑 𝐓𝐑𝐄𝐄𝐒 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇 𝐌𝐔𝐋𝐂𝐇

This is one of the most common silent tree killers homeowners accidentally create.

On the left is what NOT to do: volcano mulching.
On the right is the correct method: proper mulching.

Here is the plain truth.

When mulch is piled up against the trunk:
• It traps moisture against the bark
• It causes rot and fungal disease
• It invites insects and pests
• It suffocates the root flare
• It slowly weakens the tree from the inside out

The tree does not die immediately.
It declines quietly over years.
By the time symptoms show, damage is already done.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐂𝐎𝐑𝐑𝐄𝐂𝐓 𝐖𝐀𝐘:
• Keep mulch 2 to 4 inches deep
• Pull mulch away from the trunk
• The root flare MUST be visible
• Mulch should look like a donut, not a volcano

Visible root flare equals a healthier, stronger, longer living tree.

This single mistake is responsible for thousands of unnecessary tree removals every year.

If your tree already has mulch piled high, fix it now.
You are not too late.

If you see mushrooms or fungus growing at the bottom of a tree, don’t ignore it.

That can be your warning sign that the inside of the tree is decaying where you can’t see it yet.

✅ What fungus at the base can mean:
●The trunk is getting weaker from the inside
●The roots may be compromised
●The tree can unexpectedly collapse during wind or storms

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁?
A tree can still look “green” and “alive” on top… while the base is failing.

About 80% 𝙤𝙛 𝙖 𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙚’𝙨 𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙩𝙨 𝙜𝙧𝙤𝙬 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙤𝙥 18 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙝𝙚𝙨 𝙤𝙛 𝙨𝙤𝙞𝙡 and they spread 2–4 𝙩𝙞𝙢𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙧 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙚𝙚’𝙨 𝙘𝙖𝙣𝙤𝙥𝙮.

That means:
• Damage far from the trunk can still weaken the tree
• Trenching, compaction, or construction can reduce stability
• Root problems often show up 𝙖𝙛𝙩𝙚𝙧 failure, not before

This is why tree issues are often 𝙧𝙤𝙤𝙩 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙨, 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙗𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙝 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙗𝙡𝙚𝙢𝙨.

You may have seen posts or videos about “exploding trees” popping up on social media due to the impending extreme cold. Do you need to worry? Should you take cover?

While the sound can be startling, our NDSU Extension Forester says trees aren’t actually exploding. What’s really happening is called a frost crack.

Here’s what to know:
- Frost cracks form in winter during extreme cold
-They’re vertical cracks in the trunk, and when they happen, they can sound like a gunshot. No actual explosions happen.
-Some species are more prone than others. In North Dakota, frost cracks are often seen on green ash and chokecherry
-The exact cause isn’t fully understood, but it’s linked to uneven shrinking and swelling of wood and water as temperatures plunge
-We can’t predict which trees will develop frost cracks
-Cracks often close during summer and reopen in future winters
-There’s no cure, though some trees may eventually grow over the crack, forming a “frost rib.”
-The crack can allow decay fungi to enter, which may affect long-term tree health or structural stability

Bottom line>>>
Frost cracks are dramatic but not uncommon in cold climates. Keep an eye on affected trees, especially large or mature ones near homes or walkways.
