This is one of the most common silent tree killers homeowners accidentally create.

On the left is what NOT to do: volcano mulching.
On the right is the correct method: proper mulching.

Here is the plain truth.

When mulch is piled up against the trunk:
โ€ข It traps moisture against the bark
โ€ข It causes rot and fungal disease
โ€ข It invites insects and pests
โ€ข It suffocates the root flare
โ€ข It slowly weakens the tree from the inside out

The tree does not die immediately.
It declines quietly over years.
By the time symptoms show, damage is already done.

๐“๐‡๐„ ๐‚๐Ž๐‘๐‘๐„๐‚๐“ ๐–๐€๐˜:
โ€ข Keep mulch 2 to 4 inches deep
โ€ข Pull mulch away from the trunk
โ€ข The root flare MUST be visible
โ€ข Mulch should look like a donut, not a volcano

Visible root flare equals a healthier, stronger, longer living tree.

This single mistake is responsible for thousands of unnecessary tree removals every year.

If your tree already has mulch piled high, fix it now.
You are not too late.

Share this so fewer homeowners unknowingly destroy good trees.

If you see mushrooms or fungus growing at the bottom of a tree, donโ€™t ignore it.

That can be your warning sign that the inside of the tree is decaying where you canโ€™t see it yet.

โœ… What fungus at the base can mean:
โ—The trunk is getting weaker from the inside
โ—The roots may be compromised
โ—The tree can unexpectedly collapse during wind or storms

A tree can still look โ€œgreenโ€ and โ€œaliveโ€ on topโ€ฆ while the base is failing.

If you want, comment โ€œCHECKโ€ and Iโ€™ll tell you what to look for in your yard.

You may have seen posts or videos about โ€œexploding treesโ€ popping up on social media due to the impending extreme cold. Do you need to worry? Should you take cover?

While the sound can be startling, our NDSU Extension Forester says trees arenโ€™t actually exploding. Whatโ€™s really happening is called a frost crack.

Hereโ€™s what to know:
- Frost cracks form in winter during extreme cold
-Theyโ€™re vertical cracks in the trunk, and when they happen, they can sound like a gunshot. No actual explosions happen.
-Some species are more prone than others. In North Dakota, frost cracks are often seen on green ash and chokecherry
-The exact cause isnโ€™t fully understood, but itโ€™s linked to uneven shrinking and swelling of wood and water as temperatures plunge
-We canโ€™t predict which trees will develop frost cracks
-Cracks often close during summer and reopen in future winters
-Thereโ€™s no cure, though some trees may eventually grow over the crack, forming a โ€œfrost rib.โ€
-The crack can allow decay fungi to enter, which may affect long-term tree health or structural stability

Bottom line>>>
Frost cracks are dramatic but not uncommon in cold climates. Keep an eye on affected trees, especially large or mature ones near homes or walkways.

Did You Know? โ„๏ธ๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ
Just half an inch of ice can add thousands of pounds of stress to tree branches. That added weight can cause limbs to break, fall and interfere with power lines โ€” a major cause of winter outages.
Proactive trimming and vegetation management help reduce these risks before winter storms arrive. Itโ€™s all part of keeping the grid safe, strong and reliable.
