My name is Jess- I'm a small business owner in Upstate NY (zone 5a) on my small hobby farm. I live to eat- gardening gives me an opportunity to grow produce I can't find (or afford) in the supermarket. I'm a mom of two girls- my hope is to encourage a love and appreciation of growing things and to pass down a little kitchen magic. I grow vegetable starts for local home gardens, I pour cold process

soap bars for party favors and/or soap & shampoo bars for a year, I have dehydrated sourdough starter (includes rehydration instructions and my loaf recipe), and there's almost always free range chicken eggs in the mini-fridge for sale.

No? 🀣
Good! 😍
I use the "ugly" misshapen for... anything that won't store for a few months in the fridge.
Lotsa carrot muffins and plain shredded carrots for the freezer! πŸ₯•

Phew... 500 degree oven on a summer day is making me rethink my life choices. πŸ₯΅
I'll have bread and bagels at the market today. Sourdough is not my specialty... however I love teaching people how make it. I do not have a commercial set up but what comes out of my little kitchen is delicious.πŸ₯–
I'll have a sign up sheet with me for those interested in learning how to make their own artisan loaves! Signing up gives me permission to notify you of the days I'll be hosting workshops... on much cooler future weekends. πŸ‘©β€πŸ³

Catherine's egg operation is in full force... we've got them coming out of our ears.
I bought bougie clear egg cartons for the market- Catherine wanted to show off how pretty they are (she puts them in color order 🀭) but we hate how slippery the plastic is... lots of near misses so we're going back to the more grippy material. If you bought eggs for $6, come see me for your dollar back... eggs are back to $5. Turns out, we're not bougie folk. πŸ˜‰

A garden pest bit off the top of 9 of our plants.
I've never been so thankful for a sucker- a second chance. β€οΈπŸ…

Third break of the morning- stay hydrated, friends!

In an attempt to retain the heirloomness of the heirloom, I use little bags to isolate the blossoms of self pollinating plants like tomatoes and peppers (works on eggplant too, but I don't love them enough).
The bags must be tied on before the flowers open. I don't know what flowers this bee has been smoochin', but I love the Sweet Chelsea tomato so much, I'd prefer to keep its genetics true.
Every time I walk by, I jingle the bag a little to knock the pollen around. Once I see little baby fruit, I tie the bag to the branch so I know which fruit have seeds with true genetics.
Viable seeds come from FULLY ripe fruit- peppers take an especially long time to reach peak ripeness.

I mentioned last year, but it's worth repeating. Capsaicin (what makes hot peppers spicy) is a dominant gene. My husband loves orange bell peppers- I am out of seeds. The plant pictured is growing right next to a scotch bonnet. Seeds saved from a sweet pepper might yield a spicy fruit the following season if left to cross with a hot pepper.
Might be a delicious hybrid!

Keep in mind- blossom drop happens with consistent hot temps- we might be re-tying some bags with this heat.

Grow up!
No, seriously... grow vertically! 😁
Squash vines like to sprawl along the ground. For those of us with limited space, fasten the main vine to a stake with twine or zip ties and grow them vertically!
Careful though- the stems and leaves are very scratchy!

Aaaaaaand the ugly...
If I can offer any comfort at all, I can assure you that you're not alone.
Strawberries will be eaten by things other than you- offer a barrier for protection. Succession sow your squash or wait out the vine borer life cycle. Pick off eggs. Blast aphids away with the hose. Squish beetles or knock them into a bucket of soapy water. Set traps and have faith that suckers will grow. Pretend chard with holes has less calories... if you don't see bugs/eggs and you don't spray, it's probably fine to eat. Flea beetle damage looks horrendous, but it's superficial.
We do what we can... plant extra, prepare for hungry critters, enjoy the ride.

Pesto season snuck up on me!! πŸ˜‹
Next best thing to bunches of basil and garlic bulbs are the tops of your basil plants (don't you dare toss them!) as you begin to prune and some garlic scapes!
(I'll have garlic scapes at the market with me tomorrow... 😁)
Literally throw the tender section of the scape (below the flower), pruned basil leaves, olive oil, and salt into a blender. I'm just making a quick sauce for some pasta. The freezer batch I make for a year will include garlic cloves (ready 2-3ish weeks after the scape is removed), pine nuts, and parmasan cheese... but make it your own! πŸ’ͺ
Freeze any extra- a little goes a long way! ❀️

The days of tomato tar fingers have arrived! 😍
I plant our indeterminate tomatoes about a foot apart because I prune them to one leading vine.
Starting at the base and working my way up, I remove the bottom most foliage, all suckers, and any fasciated blossoms I happen to see. Then as soon as the vine reaches it, I loosely fasten it to the trellis with a zip tie.
