Our goal is to unlock the potential of properties that have been neglected and overlooked. Did someone say “carriage house”??

At our ca-1899 Gilded Age rescue project, this complementary outbuilding picks up the architectural vocabulary of the main house, scaled down but clearly in conversation.

And then there’s the space above. 😍 Guest suite? Studio? Office? Rental? Let us know what you think in the comments!

In Part 4 of Gilded Age Rescue, we step into one of the most challenging spaces in the house: the kitchen.
While so much of this 1899 home has remained beautifully intact, the kitchen tells a different story. Like many historic homes, it has been altered over time to keep up with changing technology and lifestyles. The current iteration has reached the end of its lifespan.
In this episode, we explore what’s here, what’s original, and what might still be worth saving:
Clues of the original kitchen, including distinctive glue-chip glass
A maze of doors hiding pantries, closets, and a back staircase
A butler’s pantry full of built-in storage and historic character
An enclosed porch that raises big design questions
The reality of working within a small footprint without sacrificing integrity

How do you design a modern, functional kitchen for the 21st century that still honors the history of the house? This is where historic rehabilitation really gets creative and fun.

An odd configuration of doors at the top of the back staircase in our ca-1899 Gilded Age rescue... Calling it “quirky” would be too easy. Actually, it’s a very intentional part of the house’s spatial hierarchy: service circulation separated from family life, privacy maintained through design, daily labor made efficient but discreet.

To understand a house like this, you have to step into the cultural mindset of the people who lived here. How they moved. What they valued. Only then does the plan begin to make sense.

This kind of close reading is the first step in a thoughtful historic rehabilitation strategy—one that works with the logic of the building, not against it. In preservation, good design starts with understanding what’s already there.

In this episode of Gilded Age Rescue, we uncover one of the most unexpected spaces in the house.
What looks like a simple door beneath the grand staircase turns out to be something completely different...a hidden powder room tucked into the tower of the house and dropped down into the basement. It’s an unusual solution, but one that reveals how past owners creatively solved the problem of not having a first-floor bathroom.

Inside, we find incredible details from a later era of the home’s history, including basket-weave tile floors, crackle-glazed wall tile, and built-in storage with hardware that feels straight out of an Art Deco New York apartment. While some fixtures have been replaced over time, the character of this 1920s–30s bathroom still remains.

This quirky space raises big questions for the restoration:
Should this surprising bathroom stay?
Could it be relocated to improve the layout?

Sometimes the most unusual spaces in an old house tell the most interesting stories.

Kitchen golden hour...it never fails to take my breath away. Hand-built cabinets of spalted maple - notice the distinctive dark veining that captures the fleeting moment when the wood’s natural decay process began. Paired here with a ca-1936 cast-iron sink.

Hot glue has many good uses. Repairing plaster column capitals is not one of them 🤦🏼‍♀️! What’s important is that someone cared enough to collect the pieces and now we have a reference for rebuilding them. When our team of carpenters, plasterers, and other specialists begin these satisfying repairs, we’ll be sure to share!
