In Part 4 of Gilded Age Rescue, we step into one of the most challenging spaces in the house: the kitchen.
While so much of this 1899 home has remained beautifully intact, the kitchen tells a different story. Like many historic homes, it has been altered over time to keep up with changing technology and lifestyles. The current iteration has reached the end of its lifespan.
In this episode, we explore what’s here, what’s original, and what might still be worth saving:
Clues of the original kitchen, including distinctive glue-chip glass
A maze of doors hiding pantries, closets, and a back staircase
A butler’s pantry full of built-in storage and historic character
An enclosed porch that raises big design questions
The reality of working within a small footprint without sacrificing integrity
How do you design a modern, functional kitchen for the 21st century that still honors the history of the house? This is where historic rehabilitation really gets creative and fun.
